The Perioperative Nurse delivers expert, evidence-based nursing care to patients undergoing surgical and invasive procedures, ensuring optimal safety and quality throughout the perioperative continuum. Operating within a collaborative multidisciplinary surgical team, the nurse conducts comprehensive preoperative assessments, advocates for patient needs during procedures, and provides attentive postoperative monitoring and recovery support. Additionally, the role encompasses clinical teaching, mentorship of nursing staff and students, and active participation in quality improvement initiatives to uphold perioperative standards and enhance patient outcomes. Key Responsibilities: Clinical Nursing Care: Develop, implement, and assess individualized perioperative care plans in partnership with the surgical and multidisciplinary team, spanning preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases. Perform thorough preoperative evaluations to confirm surgical readiness, including consent verification, diagnostic testing, and safety checklist completion. Continuously monitor vital signs and intraoperative parameters, promptly addressing any changes and escalating concerns to the surgical or anesthesia team. Assist in surgical procedures by maintaining aseptic technique and ensuring patient safety within the operating theater. Deliver high-quality postoperative care, including pain management, wound care, drain management, and early identification of complications. Educate patients and families on perioperative processes, surgical expectations, recovery guidelines, and post-discharge care instructions. Maintain meticulous, accurate, and timely perioperative documentation, including surgical safety checklists and intraoperative records, in compliance with hospital protocols. Patient Safety & Quality Improvement: Participate in perioperative adverse event reporting and root cause analysis to align with hospital safety and surgical quality benchmarks. Contribute to continuous quality improvement efforts, such as surgical audits, infection prevention reviews, and perioperative outcome evaluations. Ensure adherence to Rwanda Hospital Accreditation Standards and support operating theater readiness for accreditation assessments and surgical safety compliance. Oversee the proper use, sterilization, maintenance, and inventory management of surgical instruments, anesthesia equipment, and theater supplies, reporting any deficiencies to the theater in-charge. Report surgical incidents, adverse events, and near misses promptly in accordance with hospital policies and perioperative safety reporting systems. Teaching, Mentorship & Professional Development: Mentor and guide new staff and students during clinical rotations, facilitating their orientation and integration. Lead or participate in ward-based training sessions, case presentations, and nursing grand rounds to enhance clinical knowledge. Engage in ongoing professional development (CPD) activities and integrate evidence-based practices into daily clinical care.
