Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical

The Medical Surgical Nurse delivers safe, high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to patients admitted to the medical-surgical ward. Collaborating within an interdisciplinary team, this role involves conducting comprehensive assessments, planning patient care, implementing care plans, and evaluating outcomes. Additionally, the position supports clinical teaching, mentors junior staff and students, and contributes to continuous quality improvement initiatives aligned with established standards and clinical protocols. In terms of clinical responsibilities, the nurse develops, executes, and evaluates individualized patient care plans in partnership with a multidisciplinary team. Upon admission and throughout the care continuum, the nurse performs thorough assessments, records findings in patient files, and monitors vital signs, clinical parameters, and treatment responses—escalating any changes to the attending physician or nurse in charge promptly. The role also includes assisting healthcare providers during examinations and procedures, delivering pre- and post-operative care such as wound management and drain care, and educating patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions. Accurate, timely, and complete nursing documentation is maintained in accordance with hospital and national standards. To ensure patient safety and quality of care, the nurse participates in adverse event reporting, root cause analysis, and ward-level quality improvement initiatives, including data collection, audits, and clinical reviews. Compliance with Rwanda Hospital Accreditation Standards is maintained, and the nurse supports ward preparation for accreditation assessments. Responsibilities also include proper use, maintenance, and inventory of medical equipment and supplies, with deficiencies reported to the head of department, as well as incident and near-miss reporting per hospital policies. In teaching and mentorship, the nurse orients new staff and students, facilitates ward-based in-service training, case presentations, and nursing grand rounds, and engages in continuing professional development to integrate new knowledge into practice. The role supports the implementation of evidence-based nursing guidelines and standard operating procedures. Collaboration and communication are key, as the nurse actively participates in daily team rounds, handover reports, and care coordination meetings while maintaining effective communication with patients, families, and team members—upholding dignity, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity. Required Qualifications include a Master’s in Medical Surgical Nursing or equivalent, or a registered nurse with a valid license; nurses with an A1 certificate and significant relevant experience may also be considered. A minimum of five years of clinical nursing experience in a surgical hospital setting is required, with experience in a teaching or referral hospital being advantageous.
