The Medical Surgical Nurse delivers safe, high-quality, and evidence-based nursing care to patients admitted to the medical-surgical ward. Collaborating within a multidisciplinary team, this role encompasses comprehensive patient assessment, planning of care needs, implementation of care plans, and evaluation of patient outcomes. Additionally, the position supports clinical teaching, mentors junior staff and students, and contributes to continuous quality improvement initiatives aligned with established standards and clinical protocols. In clinical nursing, the nurse develops, executes, and assesses patient care plans in partnership with the healthcare team. Upon admission and throughout the care continuum, they conduct thorough nursing assessments, document findings meticulously in patient records, and monitor vital signs, clinical parameters, and treatment responses—promptly escalating any changes in condition to the attending physician or nurse in charge. The nurse assists healthcare providers during examinations and procedures, delivers pre- and post-operative care—including wound management, drain care, and monitoring for surgical complications—and educates patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions. Accurate, timely, and complete nursing documentation is maintained in accordance with hospital and national standards. In patient safety and quality improvement, the nurse participates in adverse event reporting, root cause analysis, and ward-level quality initiatives, including data collection, audits, and clinical reviews. They ensure adherence to Rwanda Hospital Accreditation Standards and support ward preparation for accreditation assessments. Additionally, they oversee the proper use, maintenance, and inventory of medical equipment and supplies, reporting any deficiencies to the Head of Department, while documenting incidents, adverse events, and near misses per hospital policies. In teaching, mentorship, and professional development, the nurse guides and supports the orientation of new staff and students during clinical rotations, engages in ward-based in-service training, case presentations, and nursing grand rounds, and pursues continuing professional development (CPD) activities to enhance clinical practice. They actively contribute to the implementation of evidence-based nursing guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Collaboration and communication are central to this role, as the nurse participates in daily team rounds, handover reports, and care coordination meetings, while effectively communicating with patients, families, and team members with dignity, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity. Candidates must hold a Master’s in Medical Surgical Nursing or equivalent, be registered nurses with a valid nursing license, or possess an A1 certificate with substantial relevant experience.
