The Neonatal Nurse is responsible for delivering safe, evidence-based nursing care to newborns, particularly preterm and ill infants requiring specialized attention. Collaborating within a multidisciplinary maternal and newborn health team, the nurse conducts comprehensive assessments, monitors clinical conditions, and implements interventions such as stabilization, thermoregulation, feeding support, and early detection of complications. Additionally, the role includes clinical teaching, mentoring nursing staff and students, and participating in quality improvement initiatives to ensure adherence to neonatal care standards and protocols. In clinical nursing care, the nurse develops, implements, and evaluates individualized care plans in partnership with the maternal and newborn health team. This involves conducting thorough neonatal assessments upon admission and throughout treatment, identifying risks and complications, and monitoring vital signs and clinical parameters to respond promptly to any deterioration. The nurse also assists with neonatal procedures, ensuring aseptic technique and patient safety, while providing care such as thermoregulation, feeding support, infection prevention, respiratory monitoring, and management of common neonatal conditions. Educating mothers and families on newborn care, danger signs, feeding practices, hygiene, and discharge instructions is integral to promoting continuity of care at Accurate and timely documentation of nursing records, monitoring charts, and care plans is maintained in accordance with hospital protocols. The nurse contributes to patient safety and quality improvement by participating in adverse event reporting, root cause analysis, and neonatal unit initiatives, including mortality and morbidity reviews, infection prevention audits, and outcome monitoring. Compliance with Rwanda Hospital Accreditation Standards is ensured, along with support for accreditation assessments and adherence to newborn care safety protocols. Proper use, sterilization (where applicable), maintenance, and inventory management of neonatal equipment, consumables, and supplies—such as incubators, radiant warmers, and oxygen delivery devices—are maintained, with any deficiencies reported to the unit in charge. Neonatal incidents, adverse events, and near misses are promptly reported in line with hospital policies. The role involves mentoring and orienting new staff and students during clinical rotations, participating in in-service training, case presentations, and nursing grand rounds, and engaging in continuing professional development (CPD) activities to apply new knowledge in practice. The nurse supports the implementation of evidence-based nursing guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Effective collaboration and communication are essential, with active participation in daily team rounds, handover reports, and care coordination meetings. The nurse communicates with patients, families, and team members with dignity, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity.
