Contract Job Description Position: Senior Operations Manager Reports To: Park Manager Location: Kafue National Park, Zambia Contract Type: Fixed-Term Contract About African Parks African Parks, a non-profit conservation organization, is entrusted with the complete rehabilitation and sustainable management of protected areas in collaboration with governments, local communities, and other key stakeholders. Currently, we oversee the operation of numerous national parks and reserves across Africa. Senior Operations Manager To contribute to our esteemed leadership team at Kazue National Park, we seek dynamic individuals ready to take on this pivotal role. Position Purpose The Senior Operations Manager leads the Park’s Conservation and Operations function, providing oversight for operational planning, infrastructure development and maintenance, fleet management, logistics, procurement, law enforcement support, and other operational programs. This position ensures that operational systems, resources, and personnel are aligned to support the successful execution of the Park’s conservation objectives. Key Responsibilities The successful candidate will: Direct oversight of the Conservation and Operations work plan and budget is required, encompassing their development, execution, implementation, ongoing monitoring, and periodic review to ensure strict alignment with the Park Strategy and Five-Year Business Plan. The Conservation and Operations team must be equipped with the necessary personnel, equipment, financial resources, and operational support to function effectively. Provide strategic oversight for infrastructure initiatives, from initial planning and execution through to ongoing maintenance, while rigorously managing budgets and maintaining stringent cost controls. Ensure adherence to established procurement policies and procedures, encompassing tender processes, contractor oversight, and contract administration. Oversee the Park’s entire fleet, encompassing vehicles, aircraft, boats, and other operational assets, while ensuring compliance with all licensing, permit, and maintenance requirements, including scheduled servicing and preventative measures. Foster and uphold a robust culture of health, safety, and risk management throughout all operational activities. Provide strategic oversight of logistics, procurement, warehousing, and inventory management functions to guarantee operations are executed efficiently and cost-effectively. Provide essential logistical support, equipment, and operational resources to ensure the effective management, development, and operational readiness of the Law Enforcement function. Coordinate and facilitate law enforcement training initiatives—such as refresher courses, advanced programs, and internal training sessions—in partnership with the Law Enforcement Advisor. Assist with wildlife translocation programs and other conservation initiatives as needed. Provide operational assistance to research collaborators, visiting scholars, media production teams, and other authorized stakeholders as needed. Direct the Park’s fire management strategy by overseeing staff training, maintaining equipment, and sustaining operational readiness. Develop and sustain a dynamic, values-based team environment that emphasizes accountability, teamwork, integrity, and ongoing enhancement. Ensure strict adherence to African Parks’ policies, procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across all operational activities. Compile and deliver precise operational reports and performance summaries to the Park Manager by the designated deadlines. Represent the Park Manager in their absence or when specifically assigned to do so. Provide strategic direction and leadership to a team of eight managers, ensuring operational activities are executed efficiently and effectively to meet organizational objectives. Minimum Qualifications and Experience Prospective candidates are expected to meet the following criteria: A recognized university degree in Conservation Management, Wildlife Management, or Natural Resource Management is required. Project Management, Operations Management, or a related field is required. Alternatively, relevant hands-on experience may be accepted in lieu of formal education. A minimum of Accumulated a minimum of one decade of progressively responsible professional experience. Candidates should hold a degree—ideally in protected area management, conservation operations, or large-scale project management. Proven expertise in conservation law enforcement, encompassing strategic operational planning, oversight of security protocols, and the cultivation of personnel capabilities. Proficiency in conservation, non-governmental, or public sector organizations is highly desirable. Demonstrated success in thriving within remote, rural, and multicultural settings with adaptability and cultural sensitivity. Proficient in both written and verbal English communication, coupled with exceptional report drafting and presentation capabilities. Proven ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships across all levels of the organization, coupled with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficient financial management abilities, encompassing budget development, expense monitoring, and strategic resource allocation, are essential. Demonstrates a strong track record of successfully overseeing numerous intricate projects and cross-functional team collaborations concurrently. Experienced in effectively managing relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, local communities, tourism operators, and development partners. Proven capability to perform efficiently amidst high-pressure situations within fast-paced and demanding settings. Prospective candidates must demonstrate robust physical fitness and a readiness to perform duties in remote, outdoor environments. Maintaining a strong sense of integrity, professionalism, self-discipline, and sound judgment is essential.
