Director of Fintech Partnerships & Ecosystem Development
Job Purpose
The Head of Fintech Partnerships & Ecosystems plays a pivotal role in advancing the Bank’s digital lending portfolio and fostering strategic ecosystem partnerships. This position encompasses the design and expansion of digital lending solutions, as well as the cultivation and oversight of collaborations with fintechs, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), and aggregators. Additionally, the role involves creating and integrating complementary financial products, such as micro-insurance and savings plans, to enhance the overall value proposition. This position is responsible for driving the Bank’s digital lending strategy, overseeing commercial execution, and managing key partnerships with fintechs and MNOs, while ensuring full accountability for the growth of the Bank’s ecosystem revenue.
Key Responsibilities
1. Digital Lending Strategy & Product Development
Design, develop, manage, and deploy cutting-edge digital lending solutions by leveraging data analytics, alternative data inputs, and sophisticated credit scoring methodologies. Continuously refine portfolio performance by adjusting pricing, credit limits, tenor, and eligibility criteria in response to data insights and evolving market trends. Develop additional offerings, including micro-insurance and structured savings plans, to strengthen customer value and boost ecosystem revenue.
2. Fintech, MNO & Ecosystem Partnerships
Develop and oversee strategic partnerships with fintechs, mobile network operators (MNOs), aggregators, and other key ecosystem participants through negotiation and management. Develop partnership agreements that ensure commercial viability, legal compliance, and strategic alignment with the Bank’s objectives. Oversee the complete partnership lifecycle, encompassing prospecting, conducting due diligence, facilitating onboarding, ensuring smooth integration, monitoring performance, and driving renewal efforts. Develop and sustain a robust pipeline of ecosystem opportunities aimed at driving and achieving growth targets. Act as the Bank’s ambassador in industry forums, fintech partnerships, and regulatory dialogues to enhance collaboration and ensure alignment with industry standards.
3. Commercial Performance & Portfolio Management
Oversee the Digital Lending P&L with accountability for sustainable growth, profitability, and disciplined cost management. Define and monitor critical performance metrics, such as loan disbursements, portfolio quality indicators (including PAR and NPL), revenue figures, and the performance of partners. Deliver consistent performance reports and strategic analyses to Management and pertinent committees on a regular basis. Work collaboratively with Finance and Risk teams to establish and maintain accurate pricing, provisioning methods, and comprehensive stress testing protocols for all lending products.
4. Risk, Compliance & Credit Governance
Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements set forth by the Bank of Tanzania as well as internal risk and credit policies. Collaborate effectively with the Risk and Credit teams to uphold strong credit risk frameworks, encompassing model governance and ongoing portfolio monitoring. Monitor the portfolio’s overall condition and proactively deploy early warning mechanisms while executing corrective measures as needed. Ensure that all partners adhere to stringent data privacy protocols, anti-money laundering (AML) measures, know-your-customer (KYC) requirements, and consumer protection regulations.
5. Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Develop and guide a top-tier team, cultivating an environment of innovation, responsibility, and efficient delivery. Work collaboratively with ICT, Operations, Legal, and other relevant departments to facilitate smooth product delivery and integration. Offer strategic perspectives to senior leadership regarding emerging fintech trends, advancements in digital lending, and potential ecosystem opportunities.
Academic Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, computer science, or a closely aligned discipline is required. A master’s degree, particularly an MBA, is highly desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of twelve years of professional experience in financial services, fintech, or digital banking is required. With a minimum of five years of senior leadership experience in digital lending, partnerships, or ecosystem development, you will bring a wealth of strategic insight and operational expertise to drive growth and innovation in these critical areas. Demonstrates extensive experience in establishing and overseeing strategic alliances with fintech firms and mobile network operators (MNOs). Experienced in developing and expanding digital lending portfolios, with a proven track record in credit model design and effective risk management strategies. Experienced in liaising with senior executive teams, board members, and regulatory bodies to foster effective communication and alignment. A solid grasp of digital financial services is essential, particularly in areas such as mobile money, USSD-based lending, and embedded finance.
