Job Overview The Soil Health Scientist will lead advanced research and field investigations aimed at enhancing soil fertility, structure, and biological activity across diverse agro‑ecological zones in Rwanda. Reporting to the Head of Research & Development, the incumbent will design experiments, analyze soil samples, and develop evidence‑based recommendations for farmers, policymakers, and agribusiness partners. Collect, process, and analyze soil samples using laboratory techniques and advanced instrumentation. Develop and validate predictive models for soil fertility and crop productivity under varying climatic conditions. Collaborate with agronomists, extension officers, and farmer groups to translate scientific findings into practical recommendations. Prepare technical reports, scientific papers, and policy briefs for internal and external audiences. Present research outcomes at national conferences, workshops, and stakeholder meetings. Lead capacity‑building sessions for junior scientists and field staff on soil sampling protocols and data management. Monitor and evaluate the impact of soil health interventions on farm yields and environmental sustainability. Required Skills Strong expertise in soil chemistry, physics, and biology. Proficiency with statistical software (R, SAS, or Python) and GIS tools for spatial analysis. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to non‑technical audiences. Experience in designing and managing large‑scale field experiments. Ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams. Knowledge of climate‑smart agriculture practices and sustainable land management. Education A Master’s degree or higher in Soil Science, Agronomy, Environmental Science, or a closely related field is required. Candidates with a Ph.D. are highly preferred, especially those with a track record of peer‑reviewed publications and experience in tropical soils. Experience Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience conducting soil research, preferably within East Africa or similar agro‑ecological contexts. Experience with farmer‑led research, extension services, or policy development will be considered an asset. Salary The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 800,000 to 1,2 million per month, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
