Job overview

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the largest humanitarian network in the world, bringing together 191 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies members. The IFRC relies on triple action (response, resilience and respect) to implement its 2030 Strategy. It responds to disasters and crises, ensuring rapid, coordinated and locally driven humanitarian action. The IFRC supports its members in strengthening the resilience of their communities to climate and environmental issues, health and well-being, as well as migration and population displacement. The IFRC promotes respect for its fundamental principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteerism, unity and universality, particularly in its work on values, power and inclusion. The IFRC focuses on its core mandate – its raison d’être – which consists of strategic and operational coordination, humanitarian diplomacy, development of National Societies and accountability. The IFRC is headed by its Secretary-General and has headquarters in Geneva and five regional offices in Africa (Nairobi); America (Panama); Asia-Pacific (Kuala Lumpur); Europe (Budapest); and the Middle East and North Africa (Beirut), as well as representative offices, service centres and delegations around the world. The IFRC applies a zero-tolerance policy to conduct that is inconsistent with the goals and objectives of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, including sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment and any other form of harassment, abuse of authority, discrimination and lack of integrity (including but not limited to financial malfeasance). The IFRC also adheres to strict child protection principles. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is facing an epidemic of Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD), a form of Ebola virus disease, in a complex context marked by population movements, insecurity, difficulties in access to health services and significant risks of continuous transmission and geographical extension. The absence of an approved vaccine or targeted specific treatment against the Bundibugyo strain underscores the importance of early detection, effective infection prevention and control, appropriate clinical care and support, dignified and safe burials, and trusted community action. The IFRC supports the DRC Red Cross in implementing a local and community response, aligned with national priorities for addressing the epidemic and coordinated with the Ministry of Health and key technical and humanitarian partners. This response is based on community surveillance, risk communication and community engagement, dignified and secure burials, infection prevention and control, access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), psychosocial and mental health support, clinical care and continuity of essential health services. Through its extensive network of volunteers and community outreach, the DRC Red Cross plays a crucial role in building community trust, facilitating early detection and referral of patients, promoting protective behaviours, and helping communities access timely and appropriate services. In parallel with the immediate fight against the epidemic, IFRC support aims to strengthen the capacities, systems and operational readiness of the DRC Red Cross and to consolidate its auxiliary role with public authorities. The response combines technical and operational support, coordination, capacity building, resource mobilization and institutional strengthening, while continuously adapting priorities and interventions to the changing epidemiological, operational and community context. This approach aims not only to help interrupt transmission and reduce the humanitarian impact of BVD, but also to strengthen the capacities of the National Society and communities in the face of future epidemics and health emergencies. Job purpose

Main duties

Reporting to the health manager, the Rapid Response Team Coordinator leads a mobile and multidisciplinary team of IFRC and DRC Red Cross staff to provide support to newly affected or priority health areas during the Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) outbreak. Democratic Republic of the Congo. During two-week to one-month missions, the Rapid Response Team Coordinator supports the DRC Red Cross branch in the affected health zone to quickly assess needs, implement and scale up priority interventions, and address critical response gaps, in coordination with health authorities, communities and other partners. The Rapid Response Team Coordinator translates the joint assessments into an integrated, time-bound deployment plan that covers all relevant response pillars, mobilizes operational support and expertise, and ensures consistent implementation of agreed priorities. This role combines operational leadership in the field, section and volunteer capacity building, local coordination, monitoring and problem solving. It does not replace the technical heads of all operations and does not require a single person to provide specialized services in all disciplines; the Rapid Response Team Coordinator ensures that competent staff, approved standards and appropriate referral mechanisms underpin implementation. Success is measured by priority gaps filled, operational interventions conducted by the sections and a documented and resourced handover that ensures business continuity after team redeployment.

Responsibilities

Functions and responsibilities of the position Deployment readiness, rapid assessment and operational planning Maintain the readiness of the joint IFRC-Red Cross team in DRC; prepare deployment targets, role allocation, equipment and support needs with the head of health and DRC Red Cross counterparts.

  • •Never pay any amount of money — for a file, a training, a uniform, or an interview. A real employer never asks the candidate to pay.
  • •Never send a photo of your ID card, passport, or banking details before you have physically verified the employer exists.
  • •Always meet in a public place, during the day — never an isolated address, a private home, or a location you cannot verify in advance.
  • •Tell a relative or friend exactly where you are going, with whom, and at what time — and share your live location if possible.
  • •Search the company name online before going: a real business has a trace (website, reviews, other employees, an official address).
  • •A salary that is far above the market rate for the position and the city is a red flag — be extra cautious.
