In Zambia, SCI has been actively executing programs since 1983, spanning key areas such as Child Rights Governance, Health and Nutrition, Child Protection, Education, Child Poverty, and Humanitarian Response. Save the Children, in collaboration with VÄyu Global Health and the Ministry of Health (MOH), and supported by funding from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Charities (LDSC), will initiate a comprehensive initiative aimed at Enhancing care for preterm and critically ill infants in Zambia remains a critical priority. The initiative seeks to lower facility-level neonatal mortality by enhancing access to high-quality respiratory care through the adoption of bubble Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP), optimizing referral and transfer systems for critically ill newborns, and elevating the competencies of healthcare personnel across Lusaka, Central, and Southern Provinces. Implementation will occur across ten district-level public health facilities equipped with 24-hour inpatient newborn care units. The intervention will bolster the standard of care for small and sick newborns by incorporating evidence-based clinical practices, reinforcing health systems, building capacity, providing mentorship, driving quality improvement, and ensuring the sustainable integration of BiPAP services into routine newborn care protocols.
