Job Purpose: Provide technical assistance to the Geotechnical Engineer/Section in performing routine tasks such as collecting, tracking, and documenting geotechnical data to maintain safe and efficient operations across the Sentinel and Enterprise Pits, Waste Rock Dumps, and other designated areas as per business requirements.
Job Responsibilities:
Providing support to Geotechnical Engineers during regular assessments of pit walls, benches, ramps, and waste dumps to identify potential instability issues. Provide technical support to engineers by performing installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting tasks for geotechnical monitoring equipment. Gather monitoring data in adherence to established protocols. Monitor ground movement using geotechnical instruments, including prisms, radar systems, and piezometers. Any indications of ground instability, as communicated by Dispatch and/or the Mine Operations team, must be promptly addressed and documented. Propose strategies to identify geotechnical hazards and recommend appropriate mitigation measures. Installation of vibrating wire piezometer sensors and setup of associated data loggers is required. Installation and relocation of slope stability radars are required for both blasting operations and routine maintenance activities. Geological and structural mapping data must be documented and recorded systematically. Provide support in the oversight of geotechnical drilling operations, including drill core management, detailed logging, and sample collection. Assess designated geotechnical sites flagged by the mining team and deliver actionable recommendations to address identified risks. Perform post-blast inspections to drive ongoing enhancements in blast design optimization. Conduct geotechnical assessments in response to slope failures or rockfall events to evaluate soil and rock conditions. Compose daily and weekly reports tailored to the specific needs of each section. Compile and input all geotechnical reports and monitoring data into the centralized geotechnical database, ensuring comprehensive documentation and accessibility.
Specific Competencies: Proficiency in Rock Mechanics and Slope Stability Principles is required. Proficient to intermediate-level proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required. Proficient in analyzing geological and geotechnical data to extract meaningful insights and inform decision-making processes. Proficiency in geotechnical software solutions, such as Surface and the Roc science Suite, is required.

Proficient in executing tasks autonomously as well as collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams. Demonstrates exceptional proficiency in analyzing complex situations and making well-informed decisions to resolve challenges effectively. High proficiency in organizational strategies and time management is essential. Dedication to maintaining a secure environment and fostering ongoing enhancements remains a top priority. Adhere to all established mine safety protocols and relevant statutory regulations without exception. Contribute to the evaluation of risks and the execution of Job Safety Analyses (SAS). Implement and uphold safety protocols while ensuring any potential hazards are identified and reported without delay. Adhere rigorously to all environmental protection regulations and protocols throughout the execution of field operations.
Experience required: Minimum requirement of one to three years of hands-on experience within an open-pit mining setting. Proficiency in operating IDS and Reuters slope stability radar systems is considered beneficial. Possesses practical experience with Vibrating Wire Piezometers and Total Station systems.
Qualifications: Full Grade 12 Certificate. A recognized institution must grant a minimum Diploma in Mining Engineering, Geology, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Applicants must possess a valid Zambian driving license, specifically Class B Manual, without exception. Affiliated with the Engineering Institute of Zambia (LIZ). It is essential to uphold a culture of collaboration and mutual support within our organization.
