Responsabilités
- Provides oversight to the Country Programs Manager, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and operational standards. A one-year contract is available, with the possibility of extension contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued funding availability. Justice Defenders confronts a stark global justice imbalance, which disproportionately burdens the poorest and most marginalized, especially those behind bars. In an era marked by a profound justice deficit, we uphold the principle that no individual should face conviction or punishment without first having the opportunity to share their narrative. Through strategic partnerships with vulnerable communities, we deliver exceptional legal education, training, and hands-on practice. By equipping community members as paralegals, we ensure critical access to free legal services precisely where they are most urgently required. We advocate for equitable justice for all individuals while fostering inclusivity and collaboration. Incarcerated individuals, those previously incarcerated, and prison staff possess invaluable insights into the legal system; however, their voices are often overlooked. By uniting them with prosecutors, law enforcement, judges, seasoned attorneys, and scholars, we unlock transformative opportunities for positive change. Justice Defenders, in collaboration with the International Development Law Organization (IDLE), is executing a two-year initiative—”Enhancing Access to Fair Trial and Timely Justice Delivery for Inmates at Jinja and Galangal Prisons”—under the Community Justice Program Phase II (CAP II) framework, spanning 2025 to 2030. This focused subproject seeks to bolster inmates’ access to fair trial rights and expedite justice delivery by dismantling legal, procedural, and institutional obstacles that perpetuate prolonged detention, with particular emphasis on remand prisoners, women, and other marginalized groups. Justice Defenders Uganda is actively seeking qualified, motivated, and driven professionals to fill the following two (2) key positions as part of this initiative. The Legal Officer will execute on-the-ground initiatives to dismantle legal, procedural, and systemic obstacles that contribute to extended pretrial detention in Jinja and Galangal prisons. Oversee and execute a comprehensive range of duties, including but not limited to strategic planning, project management, and cross-functional collaboration to drive organizational objectives. Monitor industry trends and competitive landscapes to identify opportunities for growth and differentiation. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies while maintaining the highest standards of professional integrity. Prepare and present detailed reports, analyses, and presentations to senior leadership to inform decision-making and strategic initiatives. Courtroom Advocacy: Act as the principal legal advisor for Justice Defenders, delivering expert legal representation to qualified inmates in judicial proceedings such as trials, bail applications, and appellate hearings. Self-Representation Coaching: Facilitate specialized workshops designed to empower inmates in representing themselves in court, providing instruction on legal protocols, trial processes, cross-examination strategies, and the development of public speaking proficiency. Conduct rights education initiatives and distribute easily understandable informational resources to enhance inmates’ comprehension of their constitutional, procedural, and trial rights. Establish and lead prison-based paralegal networks staffed by inmates and correctional personnel, delivering targeted training and ongoing technical mentorship to enhance their legal capabilities. Facilitate alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and victim-offender mediation to promote reconciliation among petty offenders, thereby supporting efforts to reduce prison overcrowding. Institutional Coordination: Facilitate seamless case monitoring and dynamic collaboration among key justice system stakeholders—including law enforcement, prosecutors, judicial bodies, and correctional facilities—to identify and eliminate systemic inefficiencies. Conduct comprehensive legal research to bolster client cases, ensuring adherence to criminal legal procedures, established practices, and relevant government policies.
