The Opportunity Join Geita Gold Mining Limited as the Manager, Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) Within our Data Division, this critical position plays a vital role in driving the operational success of our open-pit mining operations. You will report directly to the Director of Asset Management and Engineering and will be responsible for leading and refining maintenance strategies to improve the availability, reliability, and safety of our mobile mining equipment. Your leadership will be instrumental in ensuring that major service interventions, rebuilds, and maintenance initiatives are executed with precision and cost efficiency, thereby supporting our mine plan objectives. This position involves overseeing all key routine maintenance and overhaul tasks for both surface and underground mobile equipment. You will manage workshop operations, including the welding and tire bays, ensuring operational efficiency and full compliance with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications. Your contributions will be pivotal in optimizing equipment lifecycle performance, enhancing workplace safety, and synchronizing maintenance programs with operational objectives in the mining environment. Key Responsibilities Champion workplace safety by taking a proactive stance in recognizing, addressing, and reducing potential hazards, while guaranteeing that every team member possesses the necessary skills and training to carry out their duties without risk. Offer expert technical guidance and leadership to maintenance managers and skilled trades people, cultivating a highly effective maintenance team proficient in servicing heavy mining equipment. Develop, evaluate, and execute comprehensive scopes of work for critical maintenance and rebuild initiatives, guaranteeing full compliance with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) specifications and adherence to leading industry standards. Lead warranty management initiatives by thoroughly investigating premature equipment and component failures, then diligently pursuing claims to safeguard company assets and minimize expenses. Maintain a detailed training register for maintenance personnel, track competency levels, and develop and execute on-the-job training initiatives that align with shifting organizational requirements.
Develop and enhance the equipment replacement strategy to ensure a strong five-year rolling replacement plan, meticulously aligned with both operational and financial goals. Oversee the coordination and timely completion of equipment rebuild forecasts, programs, and projects, while delivering transparent status updates to senior leadership. Drive the selection of equipment for acquisitions or fleet expansions, guaranteeing adherence to Anglo Gold Ashanti (AGA) standards and operational feasibility. Work collaboratively with open-pit mining teams to uphold mobile equipment availability, reliability, and safety standards, ensuring alignment with mining schedules and driving productivity gains. Conduct thorough root cause analyses (RCS) for all significant component failures, ensuring detailed documentation of repairs to support ongoing enhancements and foster effective knowledge sharing across teams. Provide assistance to operational teams to balance scheduled maintenance tasks with urgent, unplanned repairs, thereby maintaining equipment availability and enhancing overall reliability. Develop and uphold precise work packages and standardized procedures for all maintenance operations, thereby establishing a comprehensive knowledge base to support future initiatives. Collaborate closely with the planning team to enhance the inventory management of spare parts and materials within Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) programs, ensuring maintenance operations remain consistently uninterrupted. Ensure all maintenance tasks identified during inspections are accurately logged and executed promptly, maintaining comprehensive documentation and closing work orders within the maintenance management system. Leverage your expertise to engage in the on-call rotation, delivering prompt assistance for system failures, reliability concerns, and urgent operational disruptions. Spearhead ongoing enhancement efforts by establishing and maintaining a 5S program, grounded in Six Sigma and Lean principles, throughout engineering and maintenance facilities. To lead a robust hazard identification and mitigation program for your team, ensuring comprehensive coverage of major hazards and critical control measures while maintaining stringent safety standards. Prepare and oversee the annual budgeting processes, developing three-year forecasts in alignment with mine planning, alongside implementing cost control measures to enhance value and efficiency. Oversee contractor partnerships with a strong emphasis on upholding safety protocols, maintaining high-quality standards, and managing cost efficiency to guarantee service delivery aligns with the company’s stringent requirements. Handle maintenance-related disputes, warranty concerns, and quality claims with promptness and professionalism to protect the company’s interests. Working Conditions This position is highly practical and may involve direct involvement in on-site maintenance tasks, thereby requiring physical stamina and the ability to operate effectively in fast-paced and occasionally demanding environments. Workers should anticipate exposure to high noise levels, airborne particulates, and other mining-related hazards, with full compliance to safety protocols and the consistent use of personal protective equipment being essential. You must possess strong hazard recognition skills to safely traverse slippery and uneven surfaces and operate in proximity to heavy machinery. Adherence to organizational safety protocols, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance measures, conflict of interest disclosures, and mandatory reporting obligations is required. About You With a strong background and dedication to mining and maintenance excellence, you offer at least 15 years of practical experience in maintaining heavy mining mobile equipment, including seven or more years in senior leadership positions. A university degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent vocational training, complemented by proven expertise in managing extensive equipment fleets, is essential. Familiarity with Caterpillar (CAT) machinery—specifically the 6060 & 6040 models—and maintenance experience with trucks such as the 785C/D and 777D/E would be highly advantageous. You demonstrate exceptional leadership capabilities, a collaborative approach, and the capacity to guide and grow cross-functional teams.
