Director of Risk Management & Controls at Standard Chartered

Job Summary: The Director, Risk & Control is tasked with assisting the Head of Corporate & Investment Banking in managing operational and process risks across the business. In this pivotal first-line risk leadership position, the role integrates robust controls, governance structures, and Operational Risk Framework mandates to enhance control efficacy, ensure regulatory adherence, and bolster operational resilience.

Key Responsibilities

You will work closely with Country and Regional leadership teams to assess, analyze, and mitigate process and operational risks across the Corporate & Investment Banking Client Coverage lifecycle—spanning in-country operations, outsourced functions, centralized hubs, and Global Business Services. Oversee the establishment of strong initial control measures by managing control design, evaluating their effectiveness, tracking issues, and guaranteeing prompt resolution to adequately address residual risks. Assess the potential operational risk impacts arising from new business strategies, product launches, regulatory updates, and initiatives originating from both the COO and Client Coverage functions to verify that appropriate control frameworks are implemented. Serve as the key liaison in-country for elevating operational risk incidents, control failures, or critical issues, spearheading thorough investigations, conducting root cause analyses, and driving the execution of corrective measures. Proactively identify emerging, thematic, and complex risk exposures, recommending practical enhancements that bolster controls and advance the bank’s operational resilience objectives. Promote and cultivate a robust risk and control culture throughout client coverage teams at every organizational level by emphasizing governance awareness, reinforcing supervisory responsibility, and upholding professional conduct standards. Facilitate risk training and communication initiatives aimed at enhancing comprehension of risk frameworks and fostering a culture of risk ownership.

Skills and Experience

Seasoned professionals with a strong background in operational risk management within the banking or financial services sector are sought, demonstrating deep proficiency in risk assessment techniques, robust control frameworks, and stringent regulatory compliance standards. Demonstrates exceptional analytical ability to thoroughly examine intricate risk scenarios, coupled with strategic insight to proactively identify possible process breakdowns, and an innovative mindset to develop and execute sustainable risk mitigation strategies that support key organizational objectives. Proven leadership in driving change management initiatives within risk functions, successfully facilitating the adoption of new risk methodologies, strengthening control frameworks, and shaping stakeholder mindsets to foster a heightened culture of risk awareness. Skilled in fostering productive collaboration across multifaceted teams—including operations, compliance, finance, and technology—to systematically embed risk management into client-facing workflows. Commercial banking expertise, particularly within Commercial and Global banking sectors, empowers effective alignment of risk oversight with dynamic market strategies. Demonstrated proficiency in conveying intricate risk-related information with clarity and conviction to diverse stakeholders, supported by a pragmatic and outcome-oriented approach.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Risk Management, or a closely related field is required for this position. Applicants must possess a minimum of five O’level credits, with English and Mathematics being mandatory requirements. Mandatory verification of qualifications by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZARA) is required. Highly desirable are advanced professional certifications, including but not limited to the Certified Risk Manager (CRM) and Financial Risk Manager (FRM), or other qualifications deemed equivalent, as they serve to validate advanced proficiency in risk management disciplines.
