Responsibilities
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable cities and settlements. UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement issues within the United Nations system. UN-Habitat works with its partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities. UN-Habitat promotes urbanization as a force for positive transformation for people and communities, helping to reduce inequality, discrimination and poverty. The UN-Habitat Regional Office for Africa (ROAF) supports African countries in developing human settlement projects to respond to the continent’s rapid urbanization and achieve sustainable development, focusing on the challenges facing African cities. In recent years, the Côte d’Ivoire Country Office has distinguished itself by strengthening the organization’s presence within the United Nations ecosystem and facilitating and strengthening dialogue with several continental and regional organizations, such as the African Development Bank (AfDB) headquarters. The project portfolio in Côte d’Ivoire has recently expanded to include active projects in the areas of waste management, housing, climate change and coastal resilience. In addition, a memorandum of understanding was recently signed between UN-Habitat and the Ivorian government to strengthen collaboration in various sectors, including housing and urban policies. In addition, several exchanges took place between UN-Habitat and the district of Abidjan on the issue of slum upgrading. In addition to managing ongoing projects, resource mobilization and response to calls for proposals remain key elements of the country office. Additional support is therefore needed for UN-Habitat activities in Côte d’Ivoire. The aforementioned project, entitled “Improving the Resilience of Coastal Communities in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana”, was launched in September 2024 and is being implemented in both countries with operational support from three implementing entities. This project requires significant stakeholder engagement and coordination. Under the supervision of the project manager, the intern will support various tasks related to monitoring and evaluation of the project, including field visits and reporting. UN-Habitat is strengthening its presence in these countries and needs support for the implementation of its programmes. The trainee will contribute to the implementation and monitoring of technical cooperation activities in the following areas: climate change adaptation, slum upgrading, housing and urban planning policies, biodiversity and natural resource management, technical writing and support for reporting. The course takes place at the UN-Habitat country office in Abidjan, in Ivory Coast. The intern will work closely with the UN-Habitat team at the Abidjan Regional Office (ROAf) if needed. He/She will also participate in the management and visibility of projects and programs.He/She will be placed under the responsibility of the Country Manager. The intern will be responsible for providing technical and administrative support to the development and implementation of UN-Habitat’s portfolio in Côte d’Ivoire, within the Regional Representation for Africa and the West Africa Cluster.
