Project Manager – Expertise in pastoralism

SNV Netherlands Development Organisation is recruiting a Project Manager with proven pastoralism expertise for its OuagadougouIn Burkina Faso. The position is full-time, under national contract.

Job description

Under the supervision of the Deputy Country Director / Sector Leader Agri-Food, the selected person will work closely with the project team. She will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of activities, providing team leadership and overseeing project operations.

Responsibilities

Coordinate the implementation of the project taking into account its specific requirements and ensure synergies and complementarities with Pro-Arides. Lead, manage and motivate the project team, partners and stakeholders to ensure that objectives are achieved within defined deadlines, budget and quality criteria. Monitor the progress of activities, resolve potential deviations from schedules and deliverables, and manage project closure.

Ensure effective communication between all stakeholders. Take responsibility for the technical content of the project and guarantee the quality of the deliverables, ensuring sufficient technical expertise to meet the required quality standards. Monitor, manage and review the project budget, ensuring that expenditures are validated in accordance with defined procedures and levels of authority. Identify and manage the financial and contractual risks of the project, ensuring financial security and respecting procurement procedures and contractual requirements.

Lead and develop project team members by offering coaching and guidance, to ensure the team has the skills and motivation needed to achieve goals. Maintain very good relations with the project team, administrative authorities, technical services, traditional and customary authorities, agro-pastoral civil society organizations, related relevant projects and programmes as well as the donor. Ensure high-quality SNV visibility and branding.

Identify and leverage development opportunities, innovation and strengthening long-term partnerships. Recognize potential threats to the project and take necessary steps to inform colleagues and adjust actions accordingly. Ensure the collection, consolidation and analysis of project data in accordance with SNV monitoring and evaluation guidelines. Contribute to the development of internal and external knowledge by documenting and sharing project results, identifying lessons learned and proposing improvements. Participate in workshops and conferences to increase knowledge and ensure dissemination of good practices from the project within SNV and with external partners.

Qualifications

At least one level + 4/5 in agriculture, development or any equivalent degree in the field of rural development. At least 10 years of relevant experience in pastoralism and cross-border animal husbandry, or in food security and nutrition, or resilience, with at least four (04) years as a project manager. Have a proven knowledge of pastoral development issues in the current context of Burkina Faso.

Good experiences in value chain development, organizational strengthening and rural financing, with solid knowledge in monitoring the realization of pastoral infrastructures. Proven project cycle experience: planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, reporting, as well as financial management and team management. Proven experience in programme development and resource mobilization, with proven knowledge of donor operations and procedures (both bilateral and multilateral) and particularly Swiss cooperation.

Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills including effective coordination, teamwork and negotiation skills. Proven work experience in conducting training and coaching. Result-oriented attitude, organizational rigor, ability to manage multiple priorities, initiative and entrepreneurial spirit. Good ability to supervise and delegate appropriately. Mastery of the main MS Office applications.

Ability to strengthen and manage relationships with regional authorities, local authorities, technical services, project partners and stakeholders. Ability to work with minimal supervision and take initiative. Ability to find solutions to problems and take corrective action. Commit to respecting the codes, standards and practices of international NGOs and SNV in particular. High-level integrity and good personal conduct are expected. Able to perform multiple field trips and in the sub-region.

Nationality: Burkina Faso. Place of employment: Ouagadougou. Nature of contract: Local fixed-term contract of one year renewable after performance evaluation. Indicative start date: December 2026.
