We are currently seeking an experienced and proficient Retail Underwriter to join the team at Old Mutual Life Assurance, working on-site in this role. Reports directly to the Team Leader of Underwriting. This role ensures adherence to established underwriting guidelines while collaborating closely with team members to evaluate and process applications efficiently. Responsibilities include conducting risk assessments, maintaining accurate documentation, and communicating decisions to stakeholders in a timely manner. The position requires strong analytical skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to work under deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Responsible for assessing and evaluating risks associated with insurance policies, the Underwriting department plays a critical role in determining policy terms, conditions, and premiums. This department ensures that the company maintains a balanced portfolio by carefully analyzing applications, conducting thorough risk assessments, and making informed decisions to mitigate potential losses while maximizing profitable opportunities. Key responsibilities include reviewing underwriting guidelines, collaborating with brokers and agents, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. - Assess risks based on information availed in the proposal forms, medical reports and other relevant documents.
- Capture data into the system and issue policy documents
- Allocate premium to correct accounts Responsible for directing and managing all bancassurance operations, ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines and policies. Compile comprehensive underwriting documentation as required by organizational standards and regulatory guidelines.
- Responsible for the preparation of reinsurance cards for significant risk exposures. Perform additional responsibilities as assigned, in alignment with the scope and expectations of the role. Prepare quotations in collaboration with supervisors, ensuring they are delivered promptly to support the acquisition of new business. Prepare, dispatch, and follow up on renewal business to maintain retention and strengthen client relationships. Ensure timely and accurate processing of renewal documents while proactively identifying opportunities to secure continued coverage. Track and manage renewal deadlines meticulously to minimize lapses and uphold client satisfaction. Handles premium booking and underwriting documentation processing with precision and efficiency. Handle customer inquiries and resolve complaints promptly to ensure high levels of satisfaction. Enforce stringent credit control measures and implement cancellation policies for accounts with outstanding balances to guarantee the timely receipt of premiums for accepted risks.
- Consistently evaluate the performance of Accounts and Brokers within the assigned section to address underperforming accounts promptly.
- Ensure timely and accurate quotation for business and follow up on the same and thereafter filing monthly reports detailing renewal capture and status of un-renewed business.
- Follow up on premium collection and enforce the credit control policy to ensure that premiums are collected in good time.
- Ensure accuracy of renewal notice and timely preparation of renewal terms for major accounts while ensuring that a copy of such terms is maintained for reference purposes.
- Prepare policy documents to ensure that they are as per terms agreed and that they get the legal effect, approve and sign them within the authority limits for effective service delivery
- Oversee supervision, training, coaching, mentoring of the Junior underwriters and the Operations officer for effective service delivery and motivation of staff.
- Ensure preparation of management reports for the department to advice the status of the department at any time.
- Support the product development team in Life business to ensure relevance.
- Ensure all necessary underwriting information required to place the risk in the reinsurance market is obtained.
- Preparation of reinsurance underwriting statistics including reinsurance recoveries on a regular basis and update the same at periodic intervals as per requirement. The incumbent will facilitate the annual treaty program renewal process and compile renewal statistics to ensure compliance with the IRA deadline.
- The position entails overseeing treaty compliance by ensuring quarterly returns are prepared and submitted promptly, calculating profit commission accurately, and finalizing annual premium adjustments upon treaty year completion. Additionally, the role involves diligently following up on outstanding premium settlements and recoveries to maintain financial integrity. Seeking a candidate with substantial experience in a related field along with a proven track record of success in similar roles. The ideal applicant must possess strong analytical skills, exceptional problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
