The Peri-operative Nurse delivers exceptional, evidence-based nursing care to patients undergoing surgical and invasive procedures, ensuring safety and quality throughout the perioperative continuum. Collaborating with a multidisciplinary surgical team, the role encompasses preoperative assessment and preparation, intraoperative patient advocacy, and postoperative monitoring, while also advancing clinical teaching, mentoring nursing staff and students, and driving continuous quality improvement to uphold perioperative standards and protocols. In clinical nursing care, the nurse develops, implements, and evaluates perioperative care plans in partnership with the surgical team across all phases. This includes conducting thorough preoperative assessments to confirm surgical readiness—verifying consent, investigations, and safety checklists—while monitoring vital signs and intraoperative parameters, responding to changes, and escalating concerns as needed. The nurse assists surgeons, anesthetists, and other providers in the operating theater, maintaining aseptic technique and patient safety, and delivers safe postoperative care involving pain management, wound care, drain management, and early detection of complications. Patient and family education on perioperative processes, procedures, recovery expectations, and discharge instructions is also provided, alongside accurate and timely documentation in compliance with hospital standards. In patient safety and quality improvement, the nurse participates in adverse event reporting and root cause analysis, contributes to theater quality initiatives such as surgical audits and infection prevention reviews, and ensures adherence to Rwanda Hospital Accreditation Standards and surgical safety protocols. Responsibilities include proper sterilization, maintenance, and inventory management of surgical instruments, anesthesia equipment, and supplies, with timely reporting of any deficiencies. The nurse also promptly reports surgical incidents, adverse events, and near misses in accordance with hospital policies. In teaching, mentorship, and professional development, the nurse guides and orients new staff and students during clinical rotations, leads ward-based training sessions, case presentations, and nursing grand rounds, and engages in continuing professional development to integrate evidence-based practices into care delivery. Active collaboration with the surgical and anesthesia teams is maintained through daily rounds, handover reports, and care coordination meetings, with effective communication ensuring patient dignity, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity. Candidates must hold a Master of Science in Peri-operative Nursing and possess a valid nursing license to practice in Rwanda, with a minimum of five years of clinical experience in perioperative or surgical nursing—preferably in a teaching or referral hospital.
