The Research Scientist will be part of Innovations for Poverty Action’s Applied Research & Methods (ARM) team, which specializes in designing and leading technical research initiatives for IPA’s global programs, with a strong emphasis on randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-experimental impact evaluations, and survey methodology. This role focuses on health-related research, where the incumbent will design and lead coverage surveys and program audits for a large-scale infectious disease prevention initiative in Sub-Saharan Africa. The position demands a blend of technical survey design, health systems expertise, and field research management to produce rigorous, actionable evidence for program partners and funders. The Research Scientist will provide intellectual leadership in coverage surveys, data audits, and impact evaluations, primarily targeting malaria prevention interventions, while also contributing to broader health policies and programs across the region. Additionally, the role involves developing, securing funding for, and executing a research agenda centered on high-impact health interventions and strategies aimed at improving outcomes for impoverished populations in low- and middle-income countries. Responsibilities: Survey Design and Technical Leadership: Develop survey protocols and audit methodologies, including sampling frameworks, questionnaire design, and quality assurance protocols. Lead evaluations, surveys, and data audits as Principal Investigator, extracting, validating, and interpreting facility-level health data. Provide technical expertise on health systems in Nigeria and other West African nations, addressing facility operations and data quality challenges. Partner Engagement and Reporting: Collaborate with the Survey Delivery Unit to refine data collection platforms, field protocols, and quality control measures. Cultivate relationships with government health partners and program stakeholders to facilitate access and support for data collection. Analyze and present survey and audit findings to program partners and funders. Team Supervision and Research Development: Oversee and mentor field research personnel, including enumerators, field coordinators, and research associates. Draft proposals for new research initiatives, covering study design, budgeting, and funder-focused narratives. Conduct technical reviews of proposals for proposed studies to ensure methodological rigor. Qualifications: Required: A PhD or equivalent in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, health economics, or a related social science discipline. Deep expertise in health systems, including an understanding of facility operations, the quality and limitations of facility-level data, and methods for engaging facility staff to retrieve and validate data. Proven experience conducting research or fieldwork in Sub-Saharan Africa. A track record of writing research proposals, including study

Expert Application Advice

Always tailor your CV to mirror the exact language used in the job posting. For example, if Innovations for Poverty Action lists "les compétences demandées dans l'annonce" as critical, ensure this phrase appears prominently in your experience summary. This shows you've carefully read their needs and are a direct match.

Positioning — Your cover letter must answer one question: why YOU for THIS specific role right NOW? Avoid generic templates — one sentence on what you specifically bring beats three generic paragraphs.

Software and standards — Specify your actual accounting tools and standards knowledge. Finance technical tests often cover reconciliation cases or variance analysis — practice these with real examples.

🎯 Make your application ATS-ready

ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) are the software recruiters use to automatically filter CVs before any human reads them. Our CV builder is specifically designed to pass these filters — and it takes under 3 minutes.

  • Never pay any amount of money — for a file, a training, a uniform, or an interview. A real employer never asks the candidate to pay.
  • Never send a photo of your ID card, passport, or banking details before you have physically verified the employer exists.
  • Always meet in a public place, during the day — never an isolated address, a private home, or a location you cannot verify in advance.
  • Tell a relative or friend exactly where you are going, with whom, and at what time — and share your live location if possible.
  • Search the company name online before going: a real business has a trace (website, reviews, other employees, an official address).
  • A salary that is far above the market rate for the position and the city is a red flag — be extra cautious.
