The Research Scientist will join Innovations for Poverty Action’s Applied Research & Methods (ARM) team, which specializes in designing and leading rigorous technical research for IPA’s global initiatives, with a focus on randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-experimental impact evaluations, and survey methodology. This role will work in close collaboration with IPA’s country offices and advisory units to enhance monitoring, evaluation, and learning efforts. The position is tailored for a health-focused Research Scientist who will spearhead the design and implementation of coverage surveys and program audits for a large-scale infectious disease prevention initiative in Sub-Saharan Africa. By integrating expertise in survey design, health systems analysis, and field research management, the candidate will produce credible, timely evidence to inform program partners and funders. The role will entail intellectual leadership of coverage surveys, data audits, and impact evaluations—primarily centered on malaria prevention interventions—as well as broader health policies and programs across Sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, the Research Scientist will develop, secure funding for, and execute a research agenda focused on high-impact health interventions and strategies aimed at improving livelihoods in low- and middle-income countries. Survey Design and Technical Leadership The Research Scientist will develop survey protocols and audit methodologies, including sampling frameworks, questionnaire design, and quality control measures. As principal investigator, they will oversee evaluations, surveys, data audits, and the extraction, validation, and interpretation of health facility-level data. The role will provide technical guidance on health systems in Nigeria and other West African nations, addressing operational challenges and data quality limitations in health facilities. Partner Engagement and Reporting Collaboration with the Survey Delivery Unit will be essential to refine data collection platforms, field protocols, and quality assurance processes. The candidate will cultivate partnerships with government health entities and program stakeholders to facilitate data collection activities. They will also contribute to the analysis and reporting of survey and audit findings for program partners and funders. Team Supervision and Research Development Responsibilities include supervising and mentoring field research staff, such as enumerators, field coordinators, and research associates. The Research Scientist will draft proposals for new research, including study design, budgeting, and narrative components tailored to funders. They will also conduct technical reviews of proposals for new studies to ensure methodological rigor. Qualifications

  • Required:
  • A PhD or equivalent in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, health economics, or a related social science discipline.

  • Never pay any amount of money — for a file, a training, a uniform, or an interview. A real employer never asks the candidate to pay.
  • Never send a photo of your ID card, passport, or banking details before you have physically verified the employer exists.
  • Always meet in a public place, during the day — never an isolated address, a private home, or a location you cannot verify in advance.
  • Tell a relative or friend exactly where you are going, with whom, and at what time — and share your live location if possible.
  • Search the company name online before going: a real business has a trace (website, reviews, other employees, an official address).
  • A salary that is far above the market rate for the position and the city is a red flag — be extra cautious.
