Country Finance Manager, Ukraine — NGO

About MAG: MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

About the role: Reporting to the Head of Support Services, you will provide strategic and operational financial leadership for the Ukraine Programme, ensuring effective financial planning, budgeting, reporting, compliance and risk management. You will support the Senior Management Team (SMT) in country in delivering programme objectives through robust financial oversight, business partnering and informed decision-making. You will be responsible for maintaining strong financial controls, ensuring compliance with organisational and statutory requirements, overseeing accounting operations, cash flow and partner finances, and producing high-quality financial analysis, forecasts and reporting. The role also leads the development of financial capacity across the programme, promoting consistency, efficiency and best practice in financial management.

About the Ukraine programme: Since the Russian invasion of 24th February 2022, Ukraine has been subjected to heavy artillery bombardment, missile, and air strikes, as well as the use of landmines and cluster munitions. The scale of the conflict and the use of high impact and indiscriminate weapons requires an urgent and extensive response. MAG responded to the crisis in 2022 and now employs nearly 440 staff in our Ukraine programme, in a range of operational and support/administrative activities, with further scale-up planned during 2026. The programme has a representation office in Kyiv, and operational offices in Mykolaiv (also covering accessible areas of Kherson) and Kharkiv.

Requirements: You will need to be a fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA etc) or have similar calibre academic or professional qualifications. You should have progressive and relevant experience in financial management role, with experience developing complex budgets and financial models for new business opportunities and donor-funded proposals in competitive environments. You will also have significant international experience, ideally having worked previously for an international organisation or NGO, with demonstrable experience of financial planning, budgeting, monitoring, forecasting, and reporting. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, with experience leading, managing and developing finance teams, including handling the performance management, capacity building, coaching and mentoring of locally recruited staff. You must be self-motivated, with a flexible and enthusiastic approach to work, and able to work well under pressure with limited supervision in a fast paced environment. Finally, the successful candidate will need to be comfortable working in complex political and volatile security contexts.

We’re looking for someone with: A professional accounting qualification, e.g. ACA, CIMA, ACCA, or equivalent. Experience developing complex budgets and financial models for new business opportunities and donor-funded proposals in competitive environments. Experience of financial planning, budgeting, monitoring, forecasting and reporting within an international or overseas operational context. Experience leading, managing and developing finance teams, including performance management, capacity building, coaching and mentoring of locally recruited staff.

Other information: Please note that as part of MAG's commitment to safeguarding, this post is subject to background checks before an offer of employment is confirmed. Benefits: Renumeration Package: £59,698.40 per annum including basic salary and all allowances and this increases with service. Accommodation: MAG will provide accommodation in-country. Leave: We recognise our staff work hard and need the appropriate time out to stay motivated. You'll have a minimum of eight weeks out of the programme per year. Expert Application Advice

When tailoring your resume for NGO, don’t just list your years of experience—prove mastery of ACCA with a specific, measurable achievement. Senior roles need concrete impact, not generic duties. This shows you understand the role’s real demands.

International NGO — NGO recruiters read your cover letter to assess your understanding of the humanitarian mission, not just technical skills. Show you know the country field context and the specific challenges of this sector.

Key figures — Budgets managed, cost savings achieved, audits closed on time: prepare 3 precise financial achievements with amounts. African CFOs often test IFRS or local GAAP knowledge — be ready with specific examples.

  • Never pay any amount of money — for a file, a training, a uniform, or an interview. A real employer never asks the candidate to pay.
  • Never send a photo of your ID card, passport, or banking details before you have physically verified the employer exists.
  • Always meet in a public place, during the day — never an isolated address, a private home, or a location you cannot verify in advance.
  • Tell a relative or friend exactly where you are going, with whom, and at what time — and share your live location if possible.
  • Search the company name online before going: a real business has a trace (website, reviews, other employees, an official address).
  • A salary that is far above the market rate for the position and the city is a red flag — be extra cautious.
