About the NOURISH Tanzania project Empowering Smallholder Farmers for Food Security and Climate Resilience, or NOURISH Tanzania, is a five-year initiative designed to enhance food security and nutritional outcomes for smallholder farming households across targeted regions in Tanzania. The initiative targets two distinct regions grappling with food insecurity and malnutrition, each confronting these issues through unique challenges and circumstances. The central-northern region, encompassing Singing, Dodoma, and Mantra, is currently experiencing severe food insecurity. The Southern Highlands region, encompassing Song we and Runway, confronts persistent challenges related to chronic malnutrition. The initiative has now progressed to its halfway point, having established a solid groundwork by enhancing the awareness of climate-smart agricultural and nutritional techniques among smallholder farming households. Furthermore, it has deepened collaboration with key stakeholders to ensure sustainable impact. The initiative seeks to enhance uptake by centralizing access to critical services, fostering stronger connections, and mitigating core systemic obstacles that have been recognized. This internship will bolster the project’s on-the-ground operations and community involvement, deepen strategic partnerships and service effectiveness, and expand its reach to new audiences. Job description The Field Intern will provide assistance in executing NOURISH Project initiatives at the community level. Collaborating closely with farmers, local leaders, extension officers, and other relevant stakeholders in the designated regions, the intern will contribute to project implementation efforts. This position requires extensive fieldwork to facilitate community engagement, execute agricultural and nutrition initiatives, track on-site advancements, and record outcomes. By overseeing these efforts, the role ensures the successful execution of project interventions. The ideal candidate should possess one to two years of hands-on experience within the agriculture and nutrition sector, complemented by direct involvement in community engagement initiatives and field activity assistance. The intern must demonstrate proficiency in engaging with rural communities through mobilization and training initiatives. They will be responsible for assisting with precise data collection, entry, and analysis, as well as preparing reports and coordinating field activities efficiently while actively seeking to expand their knowledge. Duties and responsibilities Project implementation The Field Intern will fulfill various duties, including but not limited to conducting on-site inspections, collecting and analyzing data, and assisting senior staff with project implementation. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to maintain accurate records, prepare detailed reports, and adhere to all safety protocols and company guidelines. Proficiency in relevant software and tools, along with a valid driver’s license, may also be necessary. Support the execution and ongoing management of agriculture and nutrition initiatives within designated communities, with an emphasis on training delivery and follow-up activities. To engage and activate farmers, community organizations, and local stakeholders in the project’s initiatives, meetings, demonstrations, and training programs, ensuring their active involvement and participation. Support community-level planning efforts, facilitate the identification and establishment of demonstration plots, and provide technical oversight for farmer learning activities and other on-field interventions.

• Facilitate the adoption of sustainable agricultural methods, horticultural initiatives, and nutrition-focused strategies within local communities. Mobilize, coordinate, and facilitate access to financial interventions, notably by establishing Village Savings and Lending Associations and fostering connections to financial institutions. Assist with the gathering of market and stakeholder data to pinpoint potential market opportunities and foster connections within input and supply chains. Enhance market system resilience and foster meaningful connections between smallholder farmers and essential service providers, including those offering inputs, financial resources, training, information, and market access. Collaborate effectively with community leaders, extension personnel, and project team members to enhance local engagement and foster seamless coordination. Offer comprehensive logistical and administrative assistance for field visits, meetings, and community engagement initiatives. Monitoring, learning, and reporting The Field Intern will further assist with oversight, knowledge acquisition, and documentation efforts by fulfilling the following responsibilities:
• Conduct on-site data collection utilizing approved tools, ensuring the accuracy and validity of information gathered from project locations and beneficiaries. Maintain the integrity and currency of project records by meticulously inputting data into designated tracking systems, databases, or spreadsheets, thereby ensuring accurate and up-to-date documentation of project progress. Support basic data cleaning tasks, conduct analyses, and prepare summarized reports for internal reporting and organizational learning purposes. Assist with compiling field reports, activity summaries, beneficiary documentation, and other standard paperwork as required. Engage in community feedback sessions to gather and systematically document vital observations, lessons learned, and success stories from field activities. Analyze trends, issues, and relationships to identify key insights that inform continuous learning and enhance program effectiveness.

Proactively assess risks and obstacles across value chain operations, developing and implementing viable solutions to mitigate potential disruptions. Qualifications Applicants should meet the following requirements: A recognized academic institution must confer either a diploma or a bachelor’s degree in general agriculture, crop science, horticulture, nutrition, community development, or an equivalent agricultural discipline. A minimum of one to two years of hands-on experience within the agriculture and/or nutrition industry is required. Relevant prior experience in an internship or voluntary capacity within pertinent fields will also be evaluated. Skilled professionals should possess hands-on experience engaging with local communities, collaborating with agricultural cooperatives, or supporting rural households.

• Strong community engagement skills. Possesses a solid grasp of executing field activities, engaging farmers effectively, and providing foundational extension support. Proficient in gathering and inputting data, conducting fundamental analyses, and compiling comprehensive reports. A background in agriculture, horticulture, or nutrition-sensitive community methodologies would be highly beneficial. Proficient in both written and spoken English and Kiswahili. Proficiency in utilizing digital tools, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel, along with other essential data entry and processing applications, is required. Demonstrates a strong willingness and capacity to perform duties extensively in the field, even in remote rural communities. Proficiency in climate-smart, regenerative, or sustainable agricultural methods would be advantageous.
