POSITION Engineer 3 – Metallurgy DEPARTMENT Process/Metallurgy LOCATION Geita Gold Mine Tanzania EMPLOYMENT STATUS Full Time OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE Oversee the metallurgical and technical functions of a designated segment of the process plant, offering specialized support to production and maintenance crews, spearheading continuous improvement initiatives, and ensuring the segment enhances overall plant recovery, throughput, and efficiency. Deliver technical guidance throughout the broader flow sheet, pinpoint deficiencies and optimization prospects beyond the immediate area when necessary, report directly to the Superintendent 2 – Process Technical, and assume the Superintendent-2’s duties as required. ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES Technical Core responsibilities remain consistent across all Senior Metallurgist positions. Offer specialized technical assistance tailored to your discipline within the designated section, aiming to enhance plant efficiency and maximize resource recovery. Analyze data related to process and ore characteristics to evaluate their effects on recovery rates, throughput efficiency, and overall operating costs. Proactively identify and address processing inefficiencies by conducting structured test work programs, then develop and implement optimization opportunities based on the findings. Develop, deploy, and continuously refine standard operating procedures and control philosophies to govern section activities. Conduct or contribute to thorough root cause analyses (RCA/ICAM) and develop robust corrective action plans (CAP/CAPA) to address process deviations, incidents, and instances of non-conformance. Collaborate closely with diverse teams, including mining, geology, maintenance, laboratory, and other process units, to ensure findings are seamlessly integrated with plant operations. Craft precise technical reports, analyze KPI trends, deliver project progress updates, and prepare presentations tailored for senior management and key stakeholders. Supports the development and management of the section’s annual budget, encompassing expenditures for reagents, consumables, energy, and maintenance requirements, while ensuring effective cost control measures are implemented. Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and timely delivery of process, metallurgical, and reconciliation reports. We require a strong technical background in gold processing, specifically in commination and hydrometallurgy, including expertise in crushing, milling, and Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) operations. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to conduct comprehensive plant performance evaluations and pinpoint inefficiencies throughout the entire processing flow sheet. We require a candidate with strong technical expertise in gold processing, specifically in commination and hydrometallurgy, including crushing, milling, and carbon-in-leach (CIL) operations. The ideal applicant must be proficient in conducting plant performance analyses, pinpointing inefficiencies, and developing optimization strategies across the entire processing flow sheet. Prepare technical reports, project updates, and presentations tailored for senior management and key stakeholders to ensure clear communication of progress, insights, and strategic recommendations. Technical responsibilities will be tailored and applied in alignment with the specific section designated for the incumbent’s deployment area.

• Comminution (Crushing & Milling) Responsibilities include enhancing the performance of the SAG/Ball milling circuit by improving throughput, achieving the desired product particle size (P80), managing power consumption, and controlling the recirculating load. Monitor and oversee the SAG mill’s charge weight, ball charge, and liner wear levels, while developing and maintaining schedules for relining operations and media replacement to ensure optimal performance and operational efficiency. Proactively enhance cyclone classification efficiency and ensure consistent circuit stability through targeted optimization strategies. Analyze variations in ore hardness, competency, and grindability, and assess their effects on throughput and downstream recovery.
• Leach / CIL / CIP Operations
• Oversee the optimization of leach and CIL/CIP circuits, focusing on key parameters such as cyanide dosing, dissolved oxygen levels, pH balance, and retention time to enhance operational efficiency and recovery rates. Optimize gold dissolution kinetics while reducing soluble gold and carbon-in-pulp losses in tailings to enhance overall recovery efficiency. Responsible for overseeing carbon inventory management, tracking carbon activity, coordinating carbon advance processes, and supervising acid-wash and regeneration cycles. Ensure that cyanide handling and management adhere strictly to the International Cyanide Management Code as well as all applicable site permits.
• Gold Room & Elution Oversee operations encompassing the elution circuit, electro winning, smelting processes, and the production of Dore bars. Ensure strict adherence to all protocols governing the security, custody, weighing, and dispatch of gold bullion in the gold room. Oversee the operation and maintenance of the carbon regeneration kiln and acid-wash processes that supply the elution circuit. Ensure the refining quality meets standards while reconciling the bullion with process records to maintain accuracy.
• Metal Accounting & Reconciliation Maintain the core mass balance and F-factor calculations while ensuring comprehensive end-to-end process reconciliation. Oversee the tracking and reconciliation of gold-in-process inventory as well as the final product at the refinery. Adhere to the AMIRA P754 code of practice and Gy’s sampling theory while overseeing the laboratory and plant sampling quality assurance and quality control (AQC) governance framework. Investigate, document, and resolve discrepancies in reconciliation variances and metallurgical accounting, with a focus on identifying statistical biases and performing thorough uncertainty analysis to ensure accuracy.
• Metallurgical Laboratory Oversee laboratory operations, encompassing sample preparation, fire assay procedures, and metallurgical testing.
• Maintain the precision and dependability of laboratory test outcomes while fostering ongoing enhancements in laboratory methodologies and procedures. We are responsible for overseeing the AQC program, ensuring adherence to established standards, and managing the calibration of equipment. This includes monitoring blanks, duplicates, and control charts to maintain data integrity and reliability throughout the process. Provide assistance in fulfilling the needs of geometallurgical and plant optimization test work initiatives.
• Geometallurgy Develop and execute geometallurgical models aimed at enhancing process optimization and improving resource and mine planning strategies. Collaborate closely with geology and mining teams to incorporate geometallurgical findings into strategic mine planning processes. Analyze ore properties—including mineral composition, hardness, and presence of harmful elements—and evaluate how these factors influence metal recovery rates, processing efficiency, and overall operational expenditures.
• Spearhead upcoming test-work initiatives focused on enhancing the beneficiaries of refractory ores and optimizing reagent usage.
• Water Treatment & Environmental Oversee the day-to-day operations of the water treatment facility, with a focus on maintaining strict adherence to NEC standards and additional environmental regulatory requirements. Conduct thorough assessments to pinpoint and adopt optimal methodologies that enhance water quality and maximize treatment efficiency. Monitor and evaluate water treatment data—specifically tailings water balance and discharge quality—to identify opportunities for optimizing plant operations. Schedule Workers must adhere to the site’s established shift and roster schedule, while also fulfilling on-call and standby obligations as dictated by operational requirements. Collaborate in the planning, execution, and post-shutdown evaluation phases of the section’s shutdown activities. Adhere consistently to the organization’s established code of conduct, safety protocols, and environmental management systems in all professional activities. Collaborate with HSBC teams to guarantee adherence to environmental permit conditions and fulfill reporting obligations. Other Duties Compilation of the ABU Weekly Report, end-of-month statistics, and production process reports is required. Each week, you will compile the bullion bar list in accordance with the specified schedule and submit it to the Finance Manager as well as all other designated stakeholders.

Involvement in the GGR operations ROLE REQUIREMENTS Education & Qualification A bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical and Mineral Processing Engineering is required for this position. Experience With a minimum of five years of hands-on technical expertise within a mineral or gold processing setting—or comparable experience at a gold processing plant—you meet the foundational requirements for this role. Commination expertise, including operation of SAG and ball milling circuits, is required, along with proficiency in crushing, classification through cyclones, and effective management of grinding media and liners.

• Leach/CIL/CIP: cyanide leaching, carbon-in-leach/pulp circuits, reagent and cyanide management
• The role involves overseeing the Gold Room and Elution processes, including elution, electro winning, smelting, Dore production, and bullion custody. Metal Accounting & Reconciliation involves conducting comprehensive mass balance assessments, applying F-factors for precision, managing in-process inventory tracking, performing detailed refinery reconciliations, and adhering to rigorous sampling theory principles. The Metallurgical Laboratory is responsible for preparing samples, conducting fire assays, ensuring quality assurance and quality control, and performing metallurgical test work. Geometallurgy encompasses the analysis and characterization of ore deposits, development of geometallurgical models, and integration of these models into resource and mine planning processes.

Water Treatment: Overseeing the operations of water treatment plants, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and maintaining the quality of discharge and tailings water. Preferred candidates will have prior experience with project management, budgeting, and continuous improvement methodologies such as RCA/ICAM, CAPA, and Six Sigma. Knowledge & Skills Proficient in providing metallurgical and technical assistance to operational units within a processing facility. Proficient in delivering technical support spanning the entire process flow sheet. Capable of discerning areas where improvements can be made, particularly beyond the confines of the current department, and implementing strategies to bridge those gaps. Ability to effectively leverage technology and systems to enhance operational efficiency and achieve desired outcomes. Capable of implementing and leveraging established methodologies and approaches effectively. Demonstrates sound judgment in halting operations when encountering unsafe practices or potential safety hazards.
