Job Description- Health Economist - The Center for Health Promotion and Research
Background: The Center for Health Promotion and Research provides high quality laboratory
diagnostic services, undertakes programs to strengthen the health system, and engages in research
to increase knowledge and inform policy change.
Position summary: We are seeking a Health Economist to conduct research in the area of public
health, as part of a multidisciplinary team. Full-time position in Bamenda, with ~5-15% travel
Key responsibilities
The selected candidate will assist with a variety of tasks, depending on their skill set, including:
• Conduct high-quality research and contribute to peer-reviewed publications
• Complete onboarding processes as necessary for ongoing collaborations
• Provide quality assurance for health economics data collected from participants, including
participant costs and Socio-Economic Status (SES) data
• Supervise and provide training to field staff on economic data collection
• Collaborate on the design and implementation of data collection tools for health facilities,
including time and motion studies (TMS)
• Lead or support collection of cost data at selected health facilities, including: travel to facilities
to conduct interviews and collect data, using applicable ethical research procedures; conduct
interviews with key stakeholders such as health facility managers, healthcare providers, and
budget holders as needed; ensure relevant financial/economic data is captured through key
informant interviews (KIIs)
• Carry out and support data analysis for cost-effectiveness and equity analyses, including
economic modelling using cost-effectiveness and budget impact frameworks
• Prepare research outputs including technical reports, policy briefs, conference abstracts, and
journal manuscripts
• Present findings at conferences related to health economics and TB as indicated
• Attend regular meetings with relevant collaborators and team members
• Participate in development and maintenance of the quality management system in accordance
with ISO 15189 standards
• Other duties as assigned, depending on the needs of the organization
Job Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Health Economics, Development Economics, Quantitative Economics,
Economic Policy and Planning (with a strong health component), or a closely related discipline,
OR a first degree in economics with a master’s in public health or health sciences
• Strong experience in costing and cost-effectiveness analysis, preferably of healthcare
interventions
• Strong data analysis and quantitative skills
• (Desirable) Familiarity with decision analytic modelling, including decision trees and Markov
models
• (Desirable) Proficiency in R, Stata, or other relevant statistical software
• (Desirable) Background in econometrics and its application to health systems, including equity
analysis
• Strong interest to work as part of team to improve public health
• Effective verbal and written communications skills in English, good working knowledge of French
preferred
• Excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy
• Strong writing and presentation skills
• Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal abilities
• Meticulous attention to detail in documentation and reporting
• Strong skills in Microsoft Excel
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
• Comfortable working in multi-country, cross-cultural research environments
• Willingness to develop skills in new economic evaluation methodologies and tools
• Ability to communicate effectively with senior health system stakeholders
