Senior Software Development Engineer – Founding Team Member
TapTip, a fintech platform designed to streamline digital tipping for the tourism and service sectors in developing markets, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer & Principal Application Developer to join our founding team. This is a full-time or contract-to-full-time position, based remotely in Zambia. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction of our platform, which aims to foster meaningful connections between international visitors and local service providers through a seamless, reliable, and user-friendly digital tipping system.
Position Overview
We are looking for a driven professional who is eager to contribute to the early stages of a growing organization and grow alongside it. As a key technical architect, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable software solutions, with a primary focus on application development and engineering leadership. This role demands a blend of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and collaborative problem-solving to drive innovation and deliver high-performance applications.

What We’re Looking For

You should be capable of conceptualizing solutions, interpreting specifications, designing appropriate architectures, executing development, conducting thorough testing, resolving issues, and facilitating deployment into production environments.
Frontend Experience
Strong contenders must possess hands-on proficiency with key technologies, including: React, Next.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern responsive UI development.
Backend Experience
Experience with Node.js, REST APIs, Firebase, Firestore, serverless infrastructure such as Cloud Functions, authentication systems, authorization and permissions, database architecture, API integrations, and webhooks is required.
Mobile Development
Highly desirable qualifications include experience with one or more of the following: React Native, Flutter, native iOS development, native Android development, cross-platform mobile development, App Store deployment, and Google Play deployment.
Payments & Fintech
Highly valued is prior experience within the fintech sector, encompassing: payment gateway integrations, card payments, digital wallets, mobile money, REST APIs and webhooks, transaction processing, wallet or balance systems, payment reconciliation, payout systems, KYC integrations, identity verification, fraud prevention, and financial transaction security. Preferred fintech experience, though advantageous, is not essential for candidates who demonstrate exceptional development skills and the ability to adapt rapidly.

You are required to possess your own transportation. Consistent Availability Is Important

TapTip is an emerging startup that requires agility in addressing updates, fixes, changes, testing, and technical discussions on short notice. The ideal candidate must demonstrate the ability to: address inquiries and resolve development-related issues promptly during standard business hours, participate in regularly scheduled virtual collaborative work sessions, engage in collaborative video conferences with the founding team, share your screen to collaboratively resolve issues, evaluate and discuss proposed features, make real-time modifications informed by ongoing input and observations, troubleshoot issues collaboratively, communicate progress regularly, and be available for regularly scheduled development sessions on a weekly basis. These sessions may involve: reviewing the current application, screen sharing, debugging together, discussing new features, testing updates, reviewing UI changes, planning technical architecture, and reviewing code developed with the assistance of Claude or ChatGPT. This involves evaluating the accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to best practices of AI-generated solutions to ensure they meet project requirements and maintain high standards of quality. Additionally, the role requires verifying that outputs align with project specifications, identifying potential issues or areas for improvement, and providing constructive feedback to enhance the overall development process. Executing modifications in real-time during the call, reviewing GitHub commit histories and source code submissions, and establishing and aligning on key priorities for upcoming development sessions are also part of this role. Professionals should possess strong communication skills for effective participation in video or voice calls, including the ability to share screens as required.

Primary engineers accountable for the ongoing development and maintenance of the TapTip application are tasked with ensuring its optimal performance, reliability, and scalability. These professionals are responsible for designing, implementing, and refining key features, as well as addressing technical challenges to enhance user experience and operational efficiency. Additionally, they collaborate with cross-functional teams to align the application’s functionality with evolving business requirements and industry standards. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the product’s architecture and guiding its development trajectory. This role may evolve to encompass additional duties, including: leading additional engineers, reviewing code, managing technical architecture, managing application releases, developing engineering standards, building TapTip’s engineering team, helping interview future developers, managing development workflows, improving security and reliability, helping determine infrastructure strategy, facilitating the growth process into new international markets, supporting new payment providers, and assisting in the creation and enhancement of TapTip’s upcoming product lineup.

A degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field is preferred, though not required. We prioritize tangible outcomes and the value you can deliver through your work. A strong GitHub profile, portfolio, mobile application, web application, startup project, fintech project, payment integration, open-source contribution, or personal software project can demonstrate your skills. Experience and demonstrated skills can often hold greater significance than formal qualifications alone.
