Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company (LISWMC) is inviting applications from suitably qualified, creative and self-driven candidates for the position of Legal Counsel (Company Secretary) on a fixed-term contract. This is a single position.
The job purpose is to provide legal advisory services, manage legal matters, compliance and risks, and provide Board secretariat services in order to safeguard the interests of the company. The role reports to the Chief Executive Officer.
Main duties and accountabilities include: managing the provision of legal services and advising management and the Board on the legal implications of internal policies; providing timely secretariat services to the Board; reviewing and preparing contracts and other legal documents; prosecuting non-compliance cases and representing the company in litigation matters; monitoring and evaluating compliance with compulsory standards and recommending interventions; conducting legal risk assessments; preparing monthly and quarterly legal reports; and coordinating the archiving of contracts, agreements, judgments, memoranda of understanding and other legal documents.
Candidates must be able to obtain legal opinions from the Ministry of Justice on important issues of law. The requirements are: a Full Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent; a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree or equivalent; being an Advocate of the High Court of Zambia; and being a member of the Law Association of Zambia with a current practising certificate.
Applicants should have at least eight years of work experience, four of which must be at management level. Required skills and attributes include: knowledge of corporate governance, law and litigation practice; knowledge of litigation procedures, judicial processes and rules of evidence; strong drafting, analytical and attention-to-detail skills; high integrity, confidentiality and sound professional judgment; the ability to manage competing legal, compliance and enforcement priorities; good report-writing and stakeholder communication skills; the ability to work under pressure, including urgent court matters; computer literacy and accurate legal record management; and tact and diplomacy.
