Job Scope The JCB Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of JCB/backhoe loader equipment to support excavation, earthmoving, material handling, site preparation and general operational activities. The operator is expected to maintain the equipment in good working condition and comply with all company, safety and operational requirements. Job Description Operate JCB/backhoe loader equipment safely and efficiently using the appropriate attachments for each task. Carry out digging, excavation, trenching, backfilling and earthmoving activities as instructed. Perform loading and movement of soil, gravel, sand and other materials. Carry out land preparation, levelling, grading, sloping and banking activities. Spread and level gravel or other materials as required. Assist with drainage, trenching and general site preparation activities. Follow instructions from the Site Supervisor, Foreman or authorised personnel before commencing work. Conduct a daily pre-start inspection of the JCB before operation. Check engine oil, coolant, hydraulic systems, tyres, brakes, attachments and other critical components. Report mechanical defects, damage, leaks or unusual noises immediately to the supervisor. Ensure all attachments are correctly fitted and secured before use. Operate the equipment within its safe operating limits and according to manufacturer instructions. Maintain awareness of personnel, vehicles, underground services, trenches and other hazards within the operating area. Participate in routine cleaning, lubrication and basic maintenance of the equipment. Keep the JCB clean and in good working condition. Complete daily equipment inspection sheets, logbooks and other required records. Comply with UNO Energies’ health, safety, environmental and operational procedures. Use the required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Immediately stop work and report any unsafe condition that may result in injury, damage or environmental harm. Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor. Qualifications and Experience Full Grade 12 School Certificate. Certificate or Diploma in Heavy Equipment Operation, Earthmoving Equipment Operations, or related course. Must have a valid Driver’s Licence. Must have a valid JCB/Heavy Equipment Operator’s Permit or relevant certification. Minimum of 1 – 2 years’ proven experience operating JCB/backhoe loaders . Experience in excavation, trenching, backfilling, loading and general earthmoving. Knowledge of basic equipment inspection and maintenance. Good understanding of occupational health and safety requirements. Ability to follow instructions and work effectively with supervisors and other employees. Ability to work in outdoor, industrial and construction-related environments. Must be physically fit, responsible and safety-conscious. Must be mature, sober and alert while operating machinery.
