The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is currently recruiting a GIS & Data Coordinator to oversee the systematic organization, quality control, analysis, and visualization of datasets produced by conservation field initiatives across critical landscapes and protected areas in Africa. This role will be based in Kigali, Rwanda, within the Africa Protected Areas Management Unit (AP AMU), with direct reporting lines to the Conservation Impact Manager. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with WCS field and site technical teams, the Global Conservation Technology team, and the AP AMU team. Key Responsibilities include: developing and maintaining a centralized GIS database for Africa; curating, correcting, and integrating geospatial datasets to inform conservation strategies; generating detailed maps and geospatial visualizations for planning and reporting; and assisting field teams in adopting standardized data collection and analysis workflows. The position involves providing training on essential tools such as Arc GIS Pro, Arc GIS Enterprise, Kobe Toolbox, SMART, Earth Ranger (ER), Eco scope, and other conservation technologies. Additional duties include centralizing, validating, organizing, and quality-checking multi-source datasets; performing basic to intermediate data analysis to detect trends, errors, and insights; conducting field visits to verify data accuracy and reinforce local data management systems; offering technical support to enhance data quality and completeness; and producing data summaries, maps, and visualizations as needed. The role also entails providing hands-on technical support and capacity-building for field teams, facilitating the use of GIS, Earth Ranger, SMART, Kobe Toolbox, and related conservation tools, and assisting in documenting methodologies, standards, and data-management protocols. The coordinator will support workshops, training sessions, and cross-program data reviews. Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Geospatial Analysis, Data Analytics, or a related discipline and possess at least three years of experience in data coordination, data management, monitoring, evaluation, or a related technical field. Proficiency in GIS, particularly CGIS and Arc GIS/ESR products, along with experience using conservation technology tools, is required. Familiarity with Python and/or R, as well as data visualization platforms such as Tableau or Power BI, is preferred. Prior experience supporting field data collection and management—especially with Kobe Toolbox, SMART, and Earth Ranger—is advantageous.
