MAG's vision is a world in which everyone can live free from the enduring and devastating consequences of armed violence, conflict and their legacy. People will live in communities where their rights are upheld, with dignity and choice and free from fear from mines, explosive remnants of war (ERW) and the impact of small arms and light weapons and ammunition.

MAG's mission is to save lives, ease suffering and enable sustainable development by limiting the causes and addressing the consequences of armed violence and conflict so people can live with dignity and choice, free from fear. We will use our core skills and distinctive competence to save lives through the removal of mines and ERW, and reduce the impact of small arms, light weapons and ammunition on people and communities. How we do this is as important as what we do – we work primarily with and for communities, for us 'it's all about people'.

About the programme

MAG is looking to implement a new project in support of the Uruguayan Army, specifically the War Material Service (Servicio de Materiales y Armamento). The project is structured around three complementary lines of effort: construction and refurbishment of physical infrastructure, weapons destruction, and training. The project is designed to strengthen sustainable national capacity in weapons and ammunition management by building on existing national systems.

About the role

You will provide strategic leadership and serve as MAG's primary representative in Uruguay, ensuring strong oversight and the effective delivery of high-quality programme activities. You will be accountable to MAG HQ for the set-up, implementation, and management of the country programme, including robust monitoring and evaluation. This role requires the effective integration of strategic, programmatic, and operational functions to ensure that all activities remain relevant, consistent, and aligned with MAG's standards of quality and impact.

Experience

Substantial experience working internationally in a senior management capacity in complex operating environments. Proven experience of strategically managing and directing large-scale projects, including implementation, management, monitoring and evaluation, risk assessment and mitigation, and contract compliance. Strong people management experience, with a proven ability to develop, lead and manage multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, often in remote or complex operating environments. Proven expertise in new business development, including programme design and development, networking, and contract negotiation. Demonstrated experience of developing effective relationships and negotiating with donors, government bodies, and local partners. Experience of managing financial, administrative, and human resource systems to ensure effective and efficient programme delivery. Demonstrated experience of promoting and driving forward change in relation to gender, equity, and diversity across teams.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

Demonstrable understanding of the contextual, political, and operational factors relevant for Uruguay and the Latin America region, gained through relevant professional experience and/or broader strategic knowledge. Strong financial management skills, including demonstrated experience of overseeing robust financial management across a multi-grant portfolio and maintaining effective budgetary oversight. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and sustain effective working relationships at all levels, both internally and externally. Excellent written communication skills, with proven ability to develop strategies, proposals, business plans, budgets, and high-quality reports. Sound knowledge and understanding of relevant institutional donors, including the EU, UN agencies, and government donors. Strong representation, communication, and negotiation skills, including experience engaging with senior stakeholders. Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and coordinate multiple activities simultaneously. Fluency in Spanish and English, both written and spoken.

Benefits

Remuneration Package is £58,528 GBP per annum including basic salary and all allowances and this increases with service. Accommodation: MAG will provide accommodation in-country (accompanied). Leave: Annual leave starts at 6 weeks per year and increases with service to 8 weeks per year. Flights: MAG provides 1 return international flight home per year for you and for each accompanying family member for accompanied posts. Insurance: Programme based staff are automatically covered by MAG's comprehensive insurance package including Personal accident and medical expenses insurance; Death by natural causes insurance and access to 24-hour medical assistance.

  • Never pay any amount of money — for a file, a training, a uniform, or an interview. A real employer never asks the candidate to pay.
  • Never send a photo of your ID card, passport, or banking details before you have physically verified the employer exists.
  • Always meet in a public place, during the day — never an isolated address, a private home, or a location you cannot verify in advance.
  • Tell a relative or friend exactly where you are going, with whom, and at what time — and share your live location if possible.
  • Search the company name online before going: a real business has a trace (website, reviews, other employees, an official address).
  • A salary that is far above the market rate for the position and the city is a red flag — be extra cautious.
