Job Overview We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Geothermal Energy Reservoir Engineer to join our pioneering team in Gicumbi, Rwanda. This is a unique job vacancy in Rwanda at the forefront of renewable energy technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for characterizing, modeling, and managing the geothermal reservoir for our new development project. You will apply advanced reservoir engineering principles to optimize geothermal fluid extraction, ensure sustainable reservoir management, and maximize the long-term productivity and economic viability of the resource. This role is critical to de-risking the project, informing drilling strategies, and ensuring the technical and commercial success of Rwanda’s first major geothermal power initiative. You will work closely with geoscientists, drilling engineers, and power plant designers in a dynamic, cross-functional environment. Key Responsibilities Develop and maintain dynamic numerical simulation models of the geothermal reservoir using industry-standard software (e.g., TOUGH2, Petrel, CMG). Analyze well test data (pressure transient analysis, injection tests) to determine reservoir properties, including permeability, porosity, temperature, and fluid chemistry. Forecast long-term reservoir performance and power generation potential under various development and production scenarios. Design and monitor reservoir monitoring programs, including pressure, temperature, and chemical monitoring of production and injection wells. Optimize well placement, spacing, and completion strategies in collaboration with the drilling team to enhance resource recovery. Manage the reinjection strategy to maintain reservoir pressure and ensure environmental sustainability. Conduct resource assessment and estimation, calculating the Proven, Probable, and Possible (3P) geothermal reserves. Prepare technical reports, reservoir management plans, and presentations for internal stakeholders, investors, and regulatory bodies. Provide technical expertise during the feasibility, exploration, drilling, and production phases of the project. Stay abreast of the latest advancements in geothermal reservoir engineering and modeling techniques. Required Skills Expert proficiency in geothermal reservoir simulation software (e.g., TOUGH2 suite, Petrel RE, CMG, STAR). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with expertise in pressure transient analysis and well test interpretation. In-depth knowledge of geothermal reservoir engineering principles, thermodynamics, and fluid flow in porous media. Proficiency in data analysis and scientific programming (Python, MATLAB) is highly desirable. Excellent project management and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-experts. Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and in a challenging, start-up project environment. Strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards. Education A minimum of a Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, Geothermal Engineering, Reservoir Engineering, Geophysics, or a closely related earth sciences/engineering discipline is required. A Ph.D. is considered a strong asset. Professional engineering certification (e.g., PE, CEng) or eligibility for certification is preferred. Experience A minimum of 5-8 years of direct, hands-on experience in geothermal or petroleum reservoir engineering, with a proven track record in reservoir simulation, characterization, and management. Experience in greenfield geothermal project development, from exploration to production, is highly advantageous. International work experience, particularly in East Africa’s geothermal landscape, will be a significant plus.
