Job Overview
The Data Privacy Officer will lead Microsoft Rwanda’s data protection strategy, ensuring compliance with Rwanda’s data protection regulations, the African Union’s data policies, and international standards such as GDPR and CCPA. The role involves developing privacy frameworks, conducting impact assessments, and advising business units on privacy‑by‑design principles. As a key member of the Data Protection & Governance department, you will work closely with legal, security, product, and engineering teams to embed privacy into every stage of the product lifecycle. This position offers a unique chance to influence policy, protect user data, and support the growth of digital services in Rwanda.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive data privacy program aligned with local and international regulations. Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) for new products, services, and initiatives. Provide privacy guidance and training to cross‑functional teams, ensuring privacy‑by‑design integration. Monitor regulatory changes and advise senior leadership on compliance implications. Manage data subject access requests (DSARs) and oversee incident response related to privacy breaches. Collaborate with the legal department to draft and review privacy policies, terms of service, and consent mechanisms. Maintain records of processing activities (ROPA) and ensure accurate documentation. Engage with Rwanda’s data protection authority and industry groups to stay abreast of best practices.
Required Skills
In‑depth knowledge of GDPR, CCPA, and Rwanda’s Data Protection Law. Strong analytical and risk assessment abilities. Excellent communication skills for translating complex legal concepts to technical audiences. Experience with privacy management tools and data mapping software. Ability to lead workshops and deliver effective training sessions. Proficiency in English; knowledge of Kinyarwanda and French is a plus.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Law, Information Security, Computer Science, or a related discipline is required. Candidates with a Master’s degree or certifications such as CIPP/E, CIPM, or ISO 27701 are highly preferred.
Experience
Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in data privacy, compliance, or information security roles, preferably within a multinational technology environment. Demonstrated experience in managing privacy programs across multiple jurisdictions is essential.
Salary
The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 1,500,000 to SSP 2,500,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and equity options may also be part of the total compensation package.
