At the Bela Steel Grinding Media Manufacturing Facility, we specialize in the production of high-quality steel grinding media, catering to industries requiring precision-engineered solutions. Our facility employs advanced manufacturing processes and state-of-the-art equipment to ensure consistency, durability, and performance in every product. As a key player in the steel grinding media sector, we prioritize stringent quality control measures, sustainable practices, and continuous innovation to meet the evolving demands of our clients. Our dedicated team of professionals works collaboratively to deliver tailored solutions that enhance operational efficiency and productivity for our valued customers. in Solwezi — Professionally manufactured grinding media, crafted from forged and high-chrome cast steel, is required. We are seeking an experienced senior metallurgical/hydro-metallurgical consultant to contribute to product development initiatives for our mines and mills across Zambia and the broader region. Assignment Purpose We are in search of an experienced metallurgist and metals specialist with a demonstrated history in grinding media development to join us on a consultancy basis. The successful candidate will provide external support to the Bela team by finalizing alloy chemistries and heat-treatment protocols, validating billet and charge-material strategies, establishing specifications and testing frameworks, assessing plant laboratory and quality systems, and guiding the execution plan for trial campaigns in collaboration with our international EPC technology partner—ensuring the plant commences production with its metallurgical parameters fully validated and risks mitigated. Scope of Consultancy Services Conduct product and process validation to evaluate the developed asset, determine and finalize alloy chemistries and heat-treatment formulations for forged grades as well as high-chromium cast grades, encompassing forging reduction parameters and quench-and-temper methodologies. Our responsibilities include assessing procurement specifications for round bar and cast-line charge materials, cross-referencing mill certificates with required standards, and ensuring supplier qualifications. Specification & Test Protocol Development — Responsible for creating the Master Product Specification alongside a comprehensive testing framework. This includes evaluating surface and volumetric hardness, conducting impact, drop-ball, and marked-ball tests, as well as performing microstructure analysis and dimensional verification. Assess the specified plant laboratory—including spectrometry, metallography, and hardness testing—and develop a quality management system compliant with ISO 9001, incorporating batch traceability features to ensure readiness for deployment. As the Owner’s Technical Representative, oversee the coordination and execution of installation, commissioning, and acceptance testing activities in collaboration with EPC and Technology Partners. Lead plant trials and wear-rate benchmarking initiatives in collaboration with mining customers across Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Subsequently, analyze and relay trial results to inform and enhance product development efforts. Knowledge transfer and handover responsibilities involve developing and documenting standard operating procedures (SOPs), providing mentorship to the internal technical team, and facilitating a methodical transition to the incoming Head of Metallurgical and Metals. Minimum Requirements A Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy and Mineral Processing, or Materials Science and Engineering, obtained from an accredited institution, is required. Registered Engineer with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (LIZ/Entry), possessing a current Practicing License—or able to demonstrate eligibility for registration prior to commencing duties. In cases where engagement is facilitated through a consultancy firm, the firm’s engineering unit must be registered under the LIZ Act No. 17 of 2010, a statutory requirement applicable to both Zambian and international professionals. Seeking candidates with a minimum of 15 years of post-qualification experience, encompassing senior positions in large-scale manufacturing facilities specializing in grinding media and/or steel billets, such as forging, foundry, and heat treatment operations. Proven expertise in induction melting and alloy charge control, high-chromium white cast irons, forged-ball production, and quench-and-temper processes. Experienced professionals with a proven history of supporting large-scale mining operations in jurisdictions such as Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), or comparable regions, are required—particularly those with expertise in evaluating grinding media performance. Proficient in interpreting and applying relevant standards for grinding media and steel bars, including ASTM, ISO, and GB, as well as analyzing mill certificates and conducting spectrographic analysis. Added Advantages A postgraduate qualification or an M.Sc. in metallurgy or materials engineering is required. ACE membership, when serving in a consulting engineer role, and SAIME membership are required. ISO 9001 implementation or Lead Auditor certification training is required. Technical contributions to previously conducted bankable feasibility studies or projects financed by Development Finance Institutions (Dais) are required. A current silicosis or medical fitness certificate, essential for accessing mine sites, must be presented.
