Work Location Mexico City Expected duration This internship is for a minimum 4 and maximum of 6 months and designed to be in person only (<40 hours per week). The duration can be adjusted on request of the successful candidate. Duties and Responsibilities The internship is UNPAID and interns work five days per week (full time - 40 hours). Mision and Objectives: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is committed to making the world safer from drugs, organized crime, corruption, and terrorism. UNODC supports Member States in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly by strengthening the rule of law, promoting effective and humane justice systems, and implementing health-oriented responses to drug use. Through its global programs and extensive field network, UNODC provides technical assistance and fosters international cooperation to tackle these complex challenges. Context: The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) plays a vital role in monitoring both scheduled and non-scheduled drug-related substances to ensure their use is limited to medical, scientific, and industrial purposes. In response to the growing threat of non-scheduled new psychoactive substances (NPS), INCB established the Global Rapid Interdiction of Dangerous Substances (GRIDS) Programme in 2019. The programme consolidates operational activities, including intelligence-sharing platforms and public-private partnerships, to reduce the trafficking of dangerous substances not yet under international control. The GRIDS Programme focuses on non-medical synthetic opioids, NPS, and related chemicals and precursors, leveraging INCB’s global network and expertise to facilitate voluntary intelligence exchange among Member States. More information on INCB and the GRIDS Programme is available at: Task Description Under the supervision of the Regional Drug Liaison Officer - Americas, GRIDS Programme, the Intern will contribute to the programme’s initiatives by supporting intelligence-sharing efforts, capacity-building activities, and public-private partnerships. Specific responsibilities include:

• Supporting programme implementation: Assist in developing training materials, event coordination, and engagement strategies with public-private partnerships.

• Capacity-building and awareness-raising: Support the organization of regional events, training sessions, and materials to enhance awareness of the threats posed by dangerous substances and practical response mechanisms.

• Intelligence and data management: Contribute to intelligence generation and dissemination through IONICS, supporting national focal points with operational support, reports, and assessments.

• Strengthening international partnerships: Assist in fostering collaboration between national authorities, regional agencies, and international organizations in countering synthetic drug trafficking.

• Research and analysis: Collect and analyze information on drug control policies, legislative approaches, demand and supply reduction measures, and emerging trafficking trends.

• Supporting INCB compliance efforts: Assist in evaluating Government compliance with international drug control conventions, analyzing data submitted by competent authorities, and contributing to the development of reports and policy recommendations.

• Operational support and reporting: Prepare reports, briefing materials, and public information documents, and undertake informal translations as needed.

• Other duties as assigned: Perform additional tasks to support the team’s objectives and operational activities. Qualifications/special skills

• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

• Be computer literate in standard software applications;

• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
