Scope/Capacity: The designated area of operation encompasses the Sasha Sector within Uganda, where the position will be based. Coordinates with: WCS Uganda, EAMWIO Region team, APAMU team, CWT Program, QEPA senior management Job Purpose The Sector Manager will lead the management of the Ishasha Sector of Queen Elizabeth Protected Area, under a new Collaborative Management Partnership (CMP) between WCS and UWA. The Ishasha Sector Manager will be responsible for oversight of daily operations, resource allocation, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and building and maintaining a high performing team of staff across sector departments. He/she will also need to coordinate and liaise regularly with partners and stakeholders. This position provides a unique opportunity to scale up operations in one of Uganda’s premier protected areas, resulting in an effective and adaptive species recovery and habitat management program, that enhances tourism and benefits to local communities, and the long-term sustainability of the Ishasha sector. Major Responsibilities
Localisation
- Lead the daily management of the Ishasha Sector through the direction of the Sector Management Unit (SMU), including the direct supervision and coordination of departments, administrative, operational and technical teams, allocation of resources, liaison and coordination with partners and stakeholders.
- Lead the development of a Sector Management Plan (SMP) for the Ishasha Sector, aligned with the QEPA General Management Plan, along with annual workplans and budgets.
- Conduct Sector Management Unit meetings on a monthly basis, or more frequently as needed, to facilitate comprehensive planning, strategic prioritization, stakeholder alignment, and seamless interdepartmental coordination, ensuring the successful execution of the GMP. Oversee and manage Sasha staff while fostering a culture of excellence, professionalism, and accountability to consistently meet site objectives. Drive performance by motivating employees to uphold high standards and achieve optimal results, ultimately ensuring both organizational goals and staff job satisfaction are met. Prepare and submit quarterly and annual reports, work plans, and budgets to the Steering Committee, detailing activities, deliverables, and implementation challenges while offering recommendations on staff performance, discipline, training, and career development as required. Provide administrative support to the Steering Committee by serving as the secretariat for its meetings. Support proposal development and funding initiatives while ensuring timely reporting and adherence to donor regulations. Implement the monitoring, evaluation, and learning framework in Sasha to maintain compliance and effectiveness.
- Promote the integration of human rights principles into conservation strategies across the Sasha region, ensuring alignment with international standards and best practices.
Evaluate and mitigate risks affecting Sasha operations, with a strong emphasis on developing and implementing contingency plans for security, financial, logistical, and operational vulnerabilities. Oversee consultants and contractors as needed, guaranteeing the punctual delivery of services while maintaining exceptional quality standards. Coordinate critical stakeholder collaborations and engagements specifically within the Sasha sector.
