Senior Perioperative Nursing Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Peri-operative Nurse to deliver safe, high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to patients undergoing surgical and invasive procedures. Operating within a multidisciplinary surgical team, the nurse will be responsible for preoperative assessments and preparation, intraoperative advocacy and support, and postoperative monitoring and care. The role also involves clinical teaching, mentoring nursing staff and students, and contributing to continuous quality improvement initiatives to uphold patient safety and adherence to perioperative standards. In clinical nursing care, the nurse will develop, implement, and evaluate perioperative care plans in collaboration with the surgical team across all phases—preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative. Responsibilities include conducting thorough preoperative assessments, verifying consent and safety checklists, monitoring vital signs and intraoperative parameters, and responding immediately to any changes in patient condition. The nurse will assist surgeons, anesthetists, and other healthcare providers during procedures, ensuring adherence to aseptic techniques and patient safety. Postoperatively, they will deliver safe and effective care, including pain management, wound care, drain management, and early detection of surgical complications. Additionally, the nurse will educate patients and families on perioperative processes, surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and post-discharge care instructions, while ensuring accurate and timely documentation in compliance with hospital protocols. In patient safety and quality improvement, the nurse will participate in adverse event reporting and root cause analysis, contribute to surgical audits and infection prevention reviews, and support operating theater readiness for accreditation assessments under Rwanda Hospital Accreditation Standards. They will ensure proper sterilization, maintenance, and inventory management of surgical instruments and equipment, reporting any deficiencies as required. The nurse will also promptly report surgical incidents, adverse events, and near misses in line with hospital policies. In teaching, mentorship, and professional development, the nurse will guide and support new staff and students during clinical rotations, facilitate ward-based in-service training, and engage in continuing professional development activities. They will contribute to the implementation of evidence-based nursing guidelines and standard operating procedures. The nurse will actively participate in team rounds, handover reports, and care coordination meetings, communicating effectively with patients, families, and team members while maintaining dignity, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity. The ideal candidate holds a Master of Science in Peri-operative Nursing, possesses a valid nursing license to practice in Rwanda, and brings a minimum of five years of clinical nursing experience in perioperative or surgical nursing within a hospital setting—preferably in a teaching or referral hospital.
