Responsabilités

The Regional Environmental and Social Safeguards Coordinator will be based in Kigali, Rwanda, with travel required throughout the Central Africa and Gulf of Guinea region. Reporting to the Technical Director of Rights and Communities, the Coordinator will collaborate closely with the Regional Community Conservation Coordinator and other regional technical teams. This full-time position is available immediately. As part of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), an international NGO dedicated to safeguarding wildlife and wild lands across more than 60 countries, the Coordinator will support the Central Africa and Gulf of Guinea regional program—one of WCS’s largest initiatives, spanning the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, and Gabon. This dynamic program addresses complex conservation challenges through protected area management, community engagement, sustainable livelihoods, policy reform, and sustainable financing, supported by a newly established regional hub in Kigali. The primary responsibility of this role is to assist regional, country, and site teams in applying WCS’s Environmental and Social Safeguarding Framework and related policies effectively. The Coordinator will assess environmental and social risks, ensuring compliance with WCS and donor standards while delivering practical, context-sensitive solutions. Emphasis will be placed on human rights, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, land and natural resource governance, law enforcement, stakeholder engagement, grievance mechanisms, and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (EPIC). The position will also proactively interpret donor requirements and develop tailored safeguard instruments and materials. Key responsibilities include providing guidance on environmental and social safeguards implementation at the country and site levels, aligning with global and international standards; reviewing and monitoring donor-specific requirements (such as those from the EU, KfW, GCF, and GEF); and supporting teams in maintaining and updating safeguard protocols. The Coordinator will work directly with field teams to translate policies and donor demands into actionable, locally appropriate measures, while identifying emerging risks and proposing timely solutions. A rights-based approach and gender equality and social inclusion (DESI) principles will underpin all activities. Additional duties involve conducting or supporting environmental and social risk and impact assessments, ensuring the meaningful participation of affected rights-holders, and developing mitigation strategies in coordination with ongoing monitoring efforts. The Coordinator will provide technical expertise on the rights of Indigenous Peoples and marginalized groups, including culturally appropriate engagement, EPIC, land rights, decision-making participation, and measures to prevent exclusion or harm. Support will also be provided for designing and improving grievance redress mechanisms, analyzing

  • •Never pay any amount of money — for a file, a training, a uniform, or an interview. A real employer never asks the candidate to pay.
  • •Never send a photo of your ID card, passport, or banking details before you have physically verified the employer exists.
  • •Always meet in a public place, during the day — never an isolated address, a private home, or a location you cannot verify in advance.
  • •Tell a relative or friend exactly where you are going, with whom, and at what time — and share your live location if possible.
  • •Search the company name online before going: a real business has a trace (website, reviews, other employees, an official address).
  • •A salary that is far above the market rate for the position and the city is a red flag — be extra cautious.
