Responsabilités

The Regional Environmental and Social Safeguards Coordinator will be based in Kigali, Rwanda, with frequent regional travel, reporting to the Technical Director of Rights and Communities while collaborating closely with the Regional Community Conservation Coordinator and cross-functional teams. This role is critical to ensuring the effective application of WCS’s Environmental and Social Safeguarding Framework across the Central Africa and Gulf of Guinea program, which spans the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, and Gabon. The position requires a proactive advisor who will support country and site teams in identifying, assessing, and mitigating environmental and social risks in alignment with WCS policies and donor standards, particularly concerning human rights, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, land use, gender equality, and social inclusion (GESI). Key responsibilities include providing technical guidance on safeguards implementation, reviewing donor requirements (e.g., EU, KfW, GCF, GEF), and developing risk assessments, mitigation plans, and compliance instruments. The Coordinator will engage directly with field teams, government partners, and local stakeholders to ensure safeguards are practical, contextually appropriate, and rights-based, while addressing grievance mechanisms, Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and systemic risk mitigation. Additional duties involve capacity building, training development, and data-driven monitoring to track safeguard performance and identify trends requiring intervention. Applicants must hold an advanced degree in social sciences, law, human rights, environmental safeguards, or a related field, with at least five years of progressive experience in conservation, development, or humanitarian safeguards, including direct engagement with Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Fluency in French and English is essential, and regional experience in Central Africa is highly preferred. The role demands strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently in challenging environments, and a commitment to traveling regularly to remote sites. WCS values diversity and inclusion, offering a competitive salary commensurate with experience. Applications are due by September 14, 2026.

  • •Never pay any amount of money — for a file, a training, a uniform, or an interview. A real employer never asks the candidate to pay.
  • •Never send a photo of your ID card, passport, or banking details before you have physically verified the employer exists.
  • •Always meet in a public place, during the day — never an isolated address, a private home, or a location you cannot verify in advance.
  • •Tell a relative or friend exactly where you are going, with whom, and at what time — and share your live location if possible.
  • •Search the company name online before going: a real business has a trace (website, reviews, other employees, an official address).
  • •A salary that is far above the market rate for the position and the city is a red flag — be extra cautious.
