The global justice gap disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable and marginalized communities, especially those within custodial environments, amid an escalating global justice crisis. Justice Defenders champions the fundamental right of every individual to share their narrative before facing conviction or punishment. By equipping defenseless communities with high-caliber legal education, training, and practical experience, we empower paralegals to deliver free legal services precisely where they are most needed. Our mission is to uphold justice universally while fostering inclusivity. Incarcerated individuals, those previously incarcerated, and prison staff possess invaluable insights into legal systems, yet their voices often go unheard. By bridging these perspectives with prosecutors, law enforcement, judges, seasoned attorneys, and academics, we unlock transformative opportunities for positive change. Justice Defenders, in collaboration with the International Development Law Organization (IDLE), is executing a two-year initiative titled “Enhancing access to fair trial and timely justice delivery for inmates at Jinja and Galangal prisons” under the Community Justice Program Phase II (CAP II), spanning 2025 to 2030. This subproject seeks to bolster fair trial rights and expedite justice delivery for inmates by mitigating legal, procedural, and institutional obstacles that lead to extended detention, with a focus on remand prisoners, women, and other marginalized groups. The Assistant Legal Officer will deliver daily operational and administrative legal assistance to the Legal Officer stationed in Jinja. This position emphasizes direct engagement with inmates, overseeing the tracking of primary case files across local judicial institutions, administering the daily functions of the prison paralegal network, and conducting preparatory clinics to assist inmates in self-representation. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive project success, resolve operational challenges, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Monitor performance metrics to identify trends, implement corrective actions when necessary, and align processes with strategic objectives. Lead reporting initiatives, conduct data analysis, and provide actionable insights to senior leadership for informed decision-making. Additionally, supervise staff performance, facilitate professional development opportunities, and uphold compliance with industry regulations and organizational guidelines. The incumbent will provide dedicated support to the Legal Officer, contributing to the meticulous preparation of case files, drafting essential preliminary legal documents—including bail applications, other pertinent requests, and mitigation statements—and coordinating court schedules and appearances. Lead Justice Defenders’ prison-based legal offices, where you will empower inmates by coaching them in self-representation, equipping them with essential courtroom skills, and fostering their confidence through practical exercises such as mock trials and refined court etiquette. As the principal on-ground liaison for the prison-based paralegal networks in Jinja—comprising both inmates and staff—you will oversee their day-to-day operations, address routine legal inquiries, and monitor their overall performance through structured logs and evaluations. Conduct thorough on-site inspections at local Jinja police stations, court registries, and state attorneys’ offices to retrieve misplaced files and verify the whereabouts of sureties. Organize and conduct regular on-site campaigns to educate incarcerated individuals about their rights, delivering simplified legal resources and informational materials directly within prison facilities. Expert Application Advice
Even for junior roles at Justice Defenders, the les compétences demandées dans l'annonce can feel daunting. Frame your limited experience as a strength—highlight internships, coursework, or moot court where you applied that skill. Employers want potential, not perfection.
Positioning — Your cover letter must answer one question: why YOU for THIS specific role right NOW? Avoid generic templates — one sentence on what you specifically bring beats three generic paragraphs.
First role — Lead with motivation and concrete academic/personal projects. Show thorough research on this organization — curious, well-informed junior candidates consistently outperform more experienced but less engaged profiles.

- •Never pay any amount of money — for a file, a training, a uniform, or an interview. A real employer never asks the candidate to pay.
- •Never send a photo of your ID card, passport, or banking details before you have physically verified the employer exists.
- •Always meet in a public place, during the day — never an isolated address, a private home, or a location you cannot verify in advance.
- •Tell a relative or friend exactly where you are going, with whom, and at what time — and share your live location if possible.
- •Search the company name online before going: a real business has a trace (website, reviews, other employees, an official address).
- •A salary that is far above the market rate for the position and the city is a red flag — be extra cautious.
