Job Title: Civil Engineering Material Laboratory Technician
Department: Production
Reports to: Laboratory Manager /Materials Engineer
Location : Lilongwe
Job Purpose
To carry out sampling, testing, analysis, and reporting of construction materials used in civil engineering projects to ensure compliance with project specifications, national standards, and international standards. The technician supports quality assurance by conducting accurate laboratory and field tests on soil, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, cement, steel, and other construction materials.
Responsabilités
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Material Sampling
Collect representative samples of soil, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, cement, water, and other construction materials from project sites.
Label, store, and transport samples in accordance with laboratory procedures.
Maintain proper sample identification and traceability.
Laboratory Testing
- Perform laboratory tests on construction materials in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, BS, ISO, or applicable national standards.
Conduct tests including:
Soil classification, moisture content, compaction, Waterberg limits, CBR, and particle size distribution.
Aggregate grading, specific gravity, water absorption, flakiness index, and crushing value.
Concrete slump, compressive strength, density, and cube/cylinder preparation.
Cement consistency, setting time, and fineness tests.
Asphalt bitumen penetration, Marshall Stability, density, and extraction tests.
Prepare concrete trial mixes and monitor mix quality.
Field Testing
Carry out field density tests.
Perform concrete slump and temperature tests.
Conduct site inspections and quality verification of construction materials.
Support field investigations and geotechnical testing activities.
Quality Assurance
Verify that materials comply with project specifications.
Report non-conforming materials and recommend corrective actions.
Assist in quality control audits and inspections.
Ensure testing procedures comply with quality management systems.
Laboratory Management
Operate, calibrate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment.
Ensure laboratory chemicals and testing materials are properly stored.
Health, Safety, and Environment
Comply with company health and safety policies.
Wear appropriate PPE during laboratory and field activities.
Report unsafe conditions and incidents immediately.
Ensure proper disposal of laboratory waste.
Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, Laboratory Technology, or a related engineering discipline.
Expérience
Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in a civil engineering materials laboratory.
Experience working on road, building, bridge, or infrastructure construction projects is an added advantage.
Knowledge of civil engineering material testing procedures.
Familiarity with ASTM, AASHTO, BS, ISO, or local construction standards.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Accuracy of laboratory test results.
Timely completion of laboratory and field tests.
Compliance with testing standards and procedures.
Percentage of laboratory equipment calibrated on schedule.
Turnaround time for test reports.
Number of quality non-conformities identified and resolved.
Compliance with laboratory safety requirements.
Accuracy and completeness of laboratory records.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in both laboratory and construction site environments.
Frequent travel to project sites may be required.
Exposure to dust, cement, aggregates, and varying weather conditions.
Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory during laboratory and field operations.
