As of April 2026, Tanzania will receive $9.0 billion from the World Bank, allocated across 34 initiatives aimed at fostering employment by enhancing human capital, stimulating private sector expansion, and fortifying resilience against economic shocks. This funding encompasses Investment Project Financing for tangible and social infrastructure development, Development Policy Financing to drive policy reforms and institutional advancements, and Program-for-Results financing to bolster program design, implementation, and institutional capacity-building. During FY25, IFC commitments totaled $360 million, with an FY26–27 investment pipeline projected at $864 million and an active portfolio valued at $307 million. IFC’s strategic focus spans agribusiness, light manufacturing, and tourism—sectors critical to job creation. Additionally, IFC oversees a $13.2 million advisory portfolio addressing gender inclusion, digital financial services, agribusiness, financial management, and affordable housing. Key priorities include strengthening agricultural value chains, expanding financial access for SMEs, and advancing power and telecom infrastructure development. Effective communication lies at the heart of the World Bank Group’s initiatives in Tanzania, serving as a cornerstone for transparency in the Bank’s development agenda. It fosters public awareness of current initiatives and reinforces the institution’s ties with government partners, media outlets, civil society organizations, and the broader community. Additionally, proactive monitoring of media and social platforms is essential for detecting emerging challenges early on, enabling the Country Office to proactively address and mitigate reputational risks to the World Bank Group and its operations in Tanzania. The World Bank Country Office in Tanzania is recruiting a Communications Intern to enhance the External Affairs team’s efforts. This role will assist with media tracking, social media oversight, and other communications initiatives designed to highlight the Country Office’s achievements and program impacts across Tanzania. The intern will operate under the supervision of the Senior External Affairs Officer in Tanzania for a five-month, part-time assignment. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Media monitoring (English and Kiswahili). The intern will compile a comprehensive daily media monitoring report for the Tanzania World Bank country team, consisting of two distinct sections—an English media digest and a Kiswahili press summary—distributed electronically by 10:30 a.m. each weekday. Both sections must include key developments across all sectors funded by the World Bank Group in Tanzania, and news related to the World Bank’s initiatives in the country, such as projects, events, and expert commentary. Additionally, the report should cover other major national developments, particularly those of political importance, with the intern responsible for exercising discernment in determining what constitutes significant news. The English media digest provides a comprehensive, word-for-word collection of significant English-language content—spanning print, online, social media, and broadcast (TV and radio)—focused on Tanzania, with a primary emphasis on local sources such as

Every included story must include proper attribution, including both the source link and the name of the outlet. A daily press summary in Kiswahili will be compiled, translated into English, and limited to three pages, with each story’s source clearly cited. The summary will prioritize key printed and digital outlets—including Mwananchi, Nipa she, and Harari Leo—along with other leading Kiswahili-language online platforms. The intern will leverage existing AI tools, such as WBG’s Mai, to assist with identifying, translating, and condensing Kiswahili content, as well as expediting the initial draft of the daily report. However, they will maintain editorial discretion and ensure the final product meets quality standards in terms of selection and presentation. 3. Social media monitoring and content support. The intern will conduct daily surveillance of social media platforms to detect coverage and discussions pertinent to the World Bank Group’s initiatives and programs in Tanzania. This involves tracking posts across Twitter (X), Instagram, TikTok, and other relevant platforms, as well as monitoring pertinent blogs. The intern will escalate any emerging updates that demand management’s attention. Additionally, the intern will utilize AI-assisted tools as needed to assess engagement metrics and sentiment trends across these channels, facilitating the preparation of preliminary responses or briefing documents for review—thereby expediting response times for time-sensitive matters. 4. Social media strategy and planning support. The intern will assist in converting the Country Office’s social media goals into a structured action plan that aligns with the World Bank Social Media Guidelines, while overseeing the content calendar, supporting audience research and feedback analysis, and monitoring emerging trends—such as AI-driven content—relevant to public communications. Additionally, the intern will contribute to tracking social media metrics, aiding in the development of key performance indicators (KPIs), and preparing performance reports by utilizing analytics and AI tools to derive actionable insights efficiently. 5. Results storytelling: The intern will provide ongoing assistance in creating multimedia documentation that highlights outcomes from World Bank Group-funded initiatives in Tanzania. This role involves domestic travel and includes engaging with beneficiaries and key stakeholders through interviews, drafting web-based articles, and producing accompanying visual content. Leveraging AI-assisted tools, the intern will assist with tasks such as transcribing interviews, refining initial drafts, and performing basic photo and video editing—all while ensuring published materials are verified for accuracy, properly attributed, and accurately represent the experiences and consent of beneficiaries. Selection Criteria Candidates must currently be pursuing an undergraduate degree or be in their final year of study. Candidates should possess between zero and six years of professional experience in the relevant field. An academic background that corresponds with the specified criteria outlined in the job description is required.
