The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation established in 1967. It is a member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), and has over the decades played a pivotal role in the promotion of th and Rights (SRHR) in Ghana.

PPAG was founded in response to the growing need for family planning education and services in the country. Since its inception, PPAG has evolved to become one of Ghana's leading providers and advocates for comprehensive th services, particularly focusing on young people and marginalised populations.

Guided by a rights-based approach, PPAG works to ensure that every individual especially women, youth, and vulnerable groups has access to accurate information and quality services that empower them to make informed choices about their s. PPAG operates through a network of clinics, youth centers, community-based service delivery points, and peer educators spread across the country.

PPAG’s work includes family planning services, HIV/AIDS education and care, adolescent reproductive health, safe motherhood initiatives, and gender-based violence prevention among others. The Association also engages in advocacy and capacity building to influence policies and promote gender equality and youth-friendly health services.

With a vision to be the leading provider of quality and sustainable SRHR services in Ghana, PPAG continues to be a key player in advancing health, rights, and well-being for all Ghanaians.

Job Description

VACANCY FOR MEMBER OF PPAG NOMINATION AND GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE

Introduction

PPAG is a registered volunteer based Non-Governmental, Not for Profit organisation that operates across the 16 regions of Ghana. It is the leading civil society organisation working on issues of th and rights in Ghana and a member of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF).

In 2024 PPAG initiated the reform of its governance system to strengthen its effectiveness; deepen accountability and transparency and achieve inclusion and diversity in its governance and leadership. The reform was to reposition governance in the Association to respond to the opportunities and challenges associated with the evolving social, economic and political context within which the Association operates. This was informed by an assessment of the Association’s governance system.

As part of its governance reform, PPAG has established the Nominations and Governance Committee hereafter referred to as NGC. The NGC is an independent body which reports to the Annual General Meeting and has the mandate of recruiting, performance review and succession planning for Council and Standing Committees; and review of procedural policies. The NGC is constituted of 5 members of which at least 50% shall be women and at least 20% young persons under the age of 25 at the time of their appointment. 60% shall be volunteers of the Association who do not hold any positions and 40% shall be external persons who are not members of the Association, with fair geographical representation.

PPAG intends to recruit reputable persons to serve as members of its Nomination and Governance Committee hereafter referred to as NGC. This is a volunteer position which is open to:

Internal applicants:current paid-up members of PPAG who are not members of the Council or its Standing Committees. Staff of PPAG are not eligible.

External applicants:persons who are not members of PPAG but are willing to serve in this role as volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities of the NGC

The Committee shall have the following prerogatives, functions, and duties:

Recruit council members and committee members in accordance with agreed clear guidelines, including succession planning.

Oversee an annual process for evaluating the effectiveness of the Council and its members, of all Council standing committees and of itself.

Periodically review the regulations and procedural byelaws and ensure that the Council complies and operates in accordance with governance best practices.

Report to the Annual General Meeting on the implementation and effectiveness of the matters set out at paragraphs 3.2 and 3.3.

Committee members shall serve a three-year term after which they will be eligible for reappointment to serve another term (final term), based on their performance.

This is a volunteer position and members are expected to commit 15-20 hours per year.

Committee members are expected to prepare for and attend meetings; reviewing documents, participating in discussion at meetings through other means; and delivery on assigned tasks, in line with the committee’s work plan.

Required Skills or Experience

Membership Qualifications

Experience serving on a board or non-executive committee, corporate governance or in senior executive role

Legal and ethical compliance and risk management

Organisational development and or youth leadership

Commitment to th and rights and the mission and values of PPAG

Demonstrate an understanding of diversity and inclusion in leadership and governance;

Demonstrate ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to take decisions in the interest of PPAG.

Must commit to 15-20 hours a year

Must have integrity, good and independent sense of judgment

Must have strong communication skills and ability to think creatively

Internal applicants should have been members of the Association for at least two years.
