Onboard Ship Supervisor Job Title Onboard Ship Supervisor Job Summary The core of this role is to ensure the Physical discharge of cargo is fast, safe and accurately reported. Organisation: Bluestar Shipping Lines Ltd. Department : Bluestar Shipping Office : GDNL Terminal ‘E’ Admin Building, 1st Floor, Apapa Port Complex, Apapa Wharf, Lagos-Nigeria. Reports to : Head, Bluestar Shipping Job Responsibilities Inspect and confirm that ship working gears, hatches, cranes, and discharge mechanisms are fully functional and efficient prior to and during cargo operations. Coordinate and ensure that stevedoring teams and dockworkers are promptly on board for the immediate commencement of cargo discharge operations upon vessel berthing. Monitor and drive daily cargo discharge speeds at the berth or jetty, providing real-time, accurate onboard operational updates to the Head of Shipping. Coordinate closely with terminal operations teams (at GDNL and Lekki facilities) and maintain seamless working relationships with the internal Strategic Business Unit (SBU) logistics departments to optimize cargo evacuation workflows. Compile, verify, and distribute highly accurate daily Vessel Situation Reports (SITREPs), detailing shift performance, tonnages moved, and operational milestones. Issuing formal Letters of Protest (LOP) immediately on behalf of the company as operational situations arise (e.g., ship gear breakdowns, terminal delays, or weather disruptions) to safeguard against unfair demurrage claims. Enforce corporate policies, standard shipping practices, and ensure onboard activities are carried out in a safe manner in compliance with maritime regulations.

Practical knowledge of onboard shipping operations, vessel cargo-handling procedures, stevedoring management, and terminal workflows.

Competence in tracking vessel discharge metrics and understanding port agency documentation. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Proven ability to communicate effectively with diverse, high-pressure teams including ship captains, multi-national crews, Port authorities, and external partners. Sharp reasoning and quick decision-making abilities on deck. Proven capability to recognize operational bottlenecks, handle volatile dock worker disputes, and issue technical protests under pressure. High digital literacy with proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) to draft clear, structured vessel situation reports and logs. Absolute integrity, a positive attitude, and exceptional planning skills. Highly resilient and physically fit to execute extensive onboard operations independently without constant supervision. Knowledge of Supervisory roles and operational oversight onboard vessels Ability to adhere to corporate policies and standard procedures. Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills.

Formation / Diplômes

Minimum of an HND in Maritime Transport & Business Studies, Shipping/Ports Operations & Management, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or any related discipline. Professional Qualification Professional membership or ongoing certification within maritime and shipping institutes an added advantage.

Expérience

Minimum of two (2) years of active, practical working experience within vessel operations, port agency services, stevedoring supervision, or shipping logistics. Onboard Ship Supervisor
