The intern will support the Ecosystems Division and the Cartagena Convention Secretariat by conducting research, drafting documents, and assisting in project management activities. Responsibilities include preparing meeting minutes, developing project proposals, and creating outreach materials. This role offers an opportunity to engage with environmental policy and contribute to sustainable development initiatives in the Caribbean region. Candidate Requirements: Enrolled in a graduate program or final year of a bachelor's program Degree in environmental science, marine management, or related fields Pleasant interpersonal skills Ability to interact with diverse cultural backgrounds Interest in UN work and commitment to UN ideals Fluency in English; knowledge of French and Spanish desirable Work Location Kingston Jamaica Expected duration 6 months Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority with a mandate to set the global environmental agenda, promote the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serve as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP coordinates the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners to provide technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy and to strengthen the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The Caribbean Environment Program is the Regional Seas Program for the Wider Caribbean Region under the Ecosystems Division. It promotes regional cooperation among its 38 Member States and Territories for the protection and sustainable development of the marine environment. Established in 1981, it formed the basis for the development and adoption of the Cartagena Convention in 1983 and its Protocols on Oil Spills, Marine Biodiversity (Specially Protected Areas and wildlife—SPAW), and Pollution (land-based sources of marine pollution—LBS). The Regional Coordinating Unit (UNEP-CAR/RCU) was established in 1986 in Kingston, Jamaica and is the secretariat to the Cartagena Convention and its Protocols. This internship is located in the UNEP/Ecosystems Division/Cartagena Convention Secretariat, Kingston, Jamaica. Responsibilities Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Conduct research, analysis, and drafting of documents and present data and information to support the implementation of projects and activities, including the preparation of briefs, information material, and presentations. • Take notes of working group meetings and meetings with project partners and prepare meeting minutes. • Provide support to Programme Management Officers and Project Management Officers to ensure that related to implementing partners agreements are up-to-date, and all documents are uploaded to the relevant folders. • Support the preparation and convening of regional workshops and webinars for the Secretariat. • Support the preparation of technical papers on the main focus areas of the Conventions and its Protocols, including Marine Biodiversity and Marine Pollution. • Support the development of new project proposals. • Assist in the development of new databases and the completion of existing ones related to the implementation of programmes and projects. • Assist in the compilation, design, and dissemination of infographics, fact-sheets, and awareness materials, including for posting on the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat website, social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn), display at national/regional events and inclusion in monthly and quarterly newsletters; • Prepare Outreach and Promotional material for significant environmental commemorative days, including International Day of Biodiversity, World Ocean Day, World Environment Day and International Coastal Cleanup Up Day; • Assist in the update of the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat Focal Point, Working Groups and Photo Databases; • Provide support to the implementation of Programme and project activities at UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat, including representation at national events, exhibitions, meetings of environmental clubs, etc.; • Assist in following up with the Cartagena Convention and its protocol's focal points for the submission of national reports and subsequent revision of the submitted reports. Qualifications/special skills Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); or c. Have graduated with a university degree. Preferred Area of Study: academic background in environmental science, marine or coastal management, marine biology, ecology, environmental law, international relations, sustainable development, management, or related fields relevant to marine and coastal conservation and environmental governance.
