Programme Support Intern, Nairobi, Kenya Organization: UNODC - Office on Drugs and Crime Country: Kenya City: Nairobi Office: UNODC-ROEA Work Location Nairobi, Kenya Expected duration 22 June - 31 December 2026 Duties and Responsibilities The internship is based within the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CPCJ) Programme at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Regional Office for Eastern Africa (ROEA), Nairobi, Kenya. It will run for six months, commencing in June 2026. The internship is unpaid, and interns are expected to work full-time (40 hours per week, five days per week) under the supervision of a designated staff member within the programme. For more information on UNODC’s work, please visit: [Click the Apply button below to see the contact details] As the global custodian of the United Nations Standards and Norms in Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, UNODC is mandated to support Member States in strengthening the rule of law and promoting criminal justice systems that are effective, fair, humane, and accountable, in line with international standards and norms. This internship contributes to the PLEAD Phase II (Programme for Legal Empowerment and Aid Delivery), which focuses on: Strengthening the rule of law, access to justice, and accountability within Kenya’s justice system. Leveraging technology to enhance justice service delivery. Addressing systemic bottlenecks in justice sector service provision. Improving access to justice for marginalized groups while addressing corruption. Key Responsibilities Under the overall supervision of the Head of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme, and the direct supervision of the PLEAD Programme Manager, in close technical collaboration with Associate Programme Officers, programme staff, and consultants within the Criminal Justice Programme at ROEA, the intern will undertake the following duties: 1. Substantive Support Assist in the implementation of programme and project activities in crime prevention and criminal justice. Conduct research and analytical work on key issues related to crime prevention and criminal justice systems, frameworks, and practices. 2. Programme Planning and Coordination Support the organization and execution of programme activities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, and training sessions. Prepare detailed reports, minutes, and activity summaries to document programme engagements. 3. Documentation and Presentation Development Assist in preparing background materials, presentations, talking points, and speeches for programme activities. Draft briefing notes and supporting documentation for meetings and engagements with stakeholders, including UN agencies and partner organizations. 4. Communications and Visibility Support the development, review, and management of social media content to enhance awareness and visibility of the programme’s work and impact. 5. Administrative Support Assist with procurement-related processes, including drafting terms of reference and preparing relevant documentation. 6. Other Duties Undertake additional tasks as required to support the effective delivery of the programme’s objectives. Qualifications/special skills Applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements: Be currently enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate-level programme (second university degree or higher); or Be currently enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent), preferably in Law, Criminology, Political Science, or Criminal Justice. In addition, applicants should: Be computer literate and proficient in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Demonstrate a strong interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and belief systems, including openness to differing opinions and perspectives. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have recently completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D.
