Position: Safety Officer – Civil Engineering / Petrochemical Projects

We are seeking a qualified and proactive Safety Officer with proven experience in civil engineering and petrochemical/industrial environments . The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and enforcing Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies on site, ensuring full compliance with South African legislation and site-specific petrochemical safety requirements. The role requires a strong commitment to promoting a safe working environment, reducing risk exposure, and maintaining high safety standards across all site operations.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and enforce site-specific HSE policies and procedures

Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and hazard analyses

Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and related regulations

Enforce proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Conduct safety inductions, toolbox talks, and HSE training for employees and contractors

Investigate incidents, near misses, and accidents; compile detailed reports with recommendations

Advise management and project teams on safety requirements for civil engineering activities (concrete, steelwork, formwork, etc.)

Review method statements, risk assessments, and permit-to-work documentation for high-risk activities

Monitor contractors and subcontractors for compliance with site safety standards

Maintain accurate HSE records, registers, and reports

Promote and sustain a strong safety culture across all site personnel

Minimum Requirements

National Diploma or BTech in Safety Management, Environmental Health, or related field

3–5 years’ experience as a Safety Officer in civil engineering projects

Proven experience in petrochemical or industrial environments

Strong knowledge of South African HSE legislation and permit-to-work systems

Ability to conduct site inspections, hazard identification, and risk assessments

Excellent communication and report-writing skills

Mandatory Certifications (South Africa)

Valid Medical Fitness Certificate (Occupational Health Clearance)

Petrochemical site safety induction (e.g., Sasol, Engen, Shell)

Working at Heights Certificate

Confined Space Entry Certificate

Basic Firefighting Certificate

First Aid Level 1 or higher

NEBOSH Certificate (advantageous)

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) processes

Experience with shutdowns or turnaround projects

Familiarity with environmental compliance and reporting in industrial settings

Experience auditing and implementing

ISO 45001

systems

Membership with a recognized safety body (e.g., SACPCMP, IOSH or similar)

High attention to detail and problem-solving ability

Ability to lead and influence safety culture on site

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to work under pressure in high-risk environments

Working Conditions

Work conducted on petrochemical plants, refineries, and civil engineering sites

Exposure to hazardous materials, noise, dust, and outdoor environmental conditions

Mandatory use of PPE at all times

May involve shift work, overtime, and travel between sites
