Deputy Regional Director, Africa Organization: Direct Relief Country: South Africa City: Pretoria Office: Direct Relief in Pretoria Direct Relief, a humanitarian aid organization, active in more than 100 countries and all 50 US states and territories, is improving the health and lives of people affected by poverty and/or emergencies. Direct Relief has built its reputation over 70 years, consistently earning top recognition from independent charity evaluators. Direct Relief is a nongovernmental, nonsectarian, and not-for-profit provider to people and communities regardless of politics, religious beliefs, ethnic identity or ability to pay. Direct Relief is expanding its programmatic work in the Africa region and is searching for a Deputy Regional Director to support these efforts. Summary: The Deputy Regional Director will work closely with the Regional Director, Africa to support the execution of strategic initiatives aligned with Direct Relief's mission. They will help identify and advance new opportunities, strengthen existing programs, and provide key insights related to both Direct Relief's existing network and the regional health needs generally. In this role, they will ensure efficient internal and external communications and support the timely completion of strategic and programmatic activities. The Deputy Regional Director will collaborate with internal teams and external partners to manage and evaluate medical, financial, and infrastructure support across the Sub-Saharan Africa region. They will assist the Regional Director in building relationships with government health officials, corporations, and other national and international agencies to expand the organization's reach and impact. They will assist with all regional activities including the prompt and effective distribution of medical supplies and financial aid. Key Duties and Responsibilities: Assist the Regional Director in leading programmatic activities across Africa, contributing to strategic growth and program improvement Support the implementation of goals and objectives to expand medical material and financial support to healthcare providers in the region Help conceptualize and develop new opportunities aligned with Direct Relief's mission, working closely with internal teams and external partners Represent Direct Relief in meetings, presentations, and relevant events, interacting with stakeholders including pharmaceutical executives, government officials, strategic partners and healthcare leaders, as needed, and/or requested by the Regional Director Facilitate internal collaboration to support new and existing opportunities in the Africa region Provide insight on regional health and healthcare issues, communicating key information verbally and in writing to both internal and external audiences Support review of needs assessments and provide recommendations to Direct Relief teams for optimal support of regional partners Help identify and address operational barriers that affect regional programs, including regulatory requirements, importation challenges, customs processes, tax exemptions, warehousing readiness, and in-country distribution. Assist in overseeing financial grant allocations, including recommendations on recipients, purpose, and funding amounts Assist in management and monitoring of regional program expenses and budgets, working closely with the Regional Director and the finance team to develop annual budgets Assist other departments with regional programmatic activities Maintain an in-depth understanding of partners and programs in the Africa region, ensuring ongoing engagement and alignment with Direct Relief's mission Provide relevant data and information to internal teams for public relations, media engagement, donor events, and special initiatives Assist the Regional Director and the Emergency Response Team with emergency/disaster preparation and response Conduct site assessments and ensure compliance with Direct Relief's agreements in coordination with other staff members Serve as the primary liaison and representative for the Regional Director both externally and internally during their absence, ensuring seamless communication and continuity in decision-making and program execution Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills: Bachelor's Degree with 5+ years of experience in global health, pharmaceutical access, supply chain, humanitarian operations, or health programs (Africa experience preferred) Master's degree in a health-related field is preferred Pharmaceutical industry experience preferred Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multifunctional team; Ability to work and interact with multiple senior-level external stakeholders; Ability to manage multiple competing interests/ tasks and prioritize accordingly Cross cultural leadership ability with excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to command the confidence and respect of an audience Capable and comfortable with public speaking, media interviews, and representing the organization in public Experience in relief program development, implementation, and analysis Excellent organizational skills with the ability to be detailed and task oriented Demonstrated experience in report generation and analysis of outcomes Ability to pass a Background Check and toxicology screening Proficient computer skills especially with Microsoft applications Language Proficiency: English (French proficiency a plus) Tags aid programmes global health humanitarian assistance international relief regional programmes Skills English French Cross Cultural Leadership Public Speaking Report Generation Microsoft Applications The recruiting organization, Direct Relief, has not specified a closing date for this vacancy or continues to list jobs after their stated closing date.
